Twitter Domain Names

Hello
Is it legal to register Domain Names that contain the name Twitter?
eg. MyTwitter.biz?

I have checked the TOS but no luck. I know there are definite limitations on the name "Google".

It is a registered TM just like Google and there really isn't any way you could claim your domain is generic since twitter is pretty much a made up word. Best to stay away from these domains.

Joel Comm Twitter

Although Joel Comm has "http://twitterpower.com/" Maybe if you write a book with Twitter in the title you are protected.

Are you sure about that ? I mean the domain Twitter.com yes sure but as for Twitter the verb:

1. to utter a succession of small, tremulous sounds, as a bird.
2. to talk lightly and rapidly, esp. of trivial matters; chatter.
3. to titter; giggle.
4. to tremble with excitement or the like; be in a flutter.
–verb (used with object)
5. to express or utter by twittering.
–noun
6. an act of twittering.
7. a twittering sound.
8. a state of tremulous excitement.

It is not so much about whether you are right or wrong. It is all about, whether you have the resources to defend yourself. Go ahead and register 'Twitter' names. What are you afraid of?

Twitter is just a dictionary word just like water or hotels or any other word. You just have to make sure that whatever you have on your twitter domain has nothing to do with any of the services that twitter.com provides. For example, there would be nothing wrong with owning twitter.net and making a site about birds.

I haven't heard anything official from Twitter, but they haven't gone all publicly traded and such.

People that own trademarks have a duty to protect those trademarks from dilution.

So far I haven't read any stories of them going after people with Twitter in their domain name.

I'm not a lawyer, but I would be surprised if they start because of the community and social nature of many of the sites using Twitter in the name. It sure would cause a big uproar.

Twitter is a trademark and you are not allowed to buy that domain.
Twitter can sue you, better stay away.

Looks like this issue is starting to come to light. Twitter has applied for the trademark "Tweet" and is showing more awareness of how their brand is used in naming projects: Twitter Blog: May The Tweets Be With You
