Domain sold in 2008 - now available to register?

Why would a domain name that sold on Sedo auction back in May 2008 now be available to register new from a registrar? The buyer paid £250+ for the domain - surely they wouldn't then let it expire?

Thanks

I see domains all the time that sell for hundreds at auctions expire soon after. It happens for various reasons, but it does happen.

A recent example was a domain I was bidding on - OhioRiver.net
It sold in 2007 for $445 on TDNAM. Then expired in 2008 and was back on TDNAM.

I've sometimes found that some registrars show domains as being available and some don't, I don't know why but it's happened quite often to me!.

Further research would be required, IMHO ... unfortunately there are still a LOT of claimed and "reported sales" that never actually complete and/or are simply promotions of "sales" in the hopes of buoying similar type domains (this occurs regularly with new and newer extensions, for instance and historically speaking) - carefully research all claims, stats, interested parties, and historical background, as well as similar verified sales comp's - as always - before registering!

Just my two sense.

There might be a reason the owner let the name go, like trademark problems, or it didnt live up to traffic expectations. Or simply the owner got there hands on a better name for development and tossed out the lesser ones. Not everone is a domainer
