9/11/01 :: Never Forget Child Abuse
It started as a hobby for me. My initial investment was $20 and I've done fairly well in the last 4 years. It started when I tried to acquire a domain for the company I was working for then. Looked at LLL.coms and finally decided to buy thecompanyname.com for $3000. Then I realized there was and is money to be made domain trading. I don't flip much anymore. End user sales are infrequent but much more profitable. It's great!

cyberhawks is on a distinguished road

i have been on the web from its inception and over the years have developed this site or that one but only recently become seriously interested in the business that is domaining, it seems to have a lot of what i like in a job, ie it requires technical skills, creativity, its self employment, and come on, EVERYBODY is on the internets these days

Started as a hobby, doing some personal development on some small sites. Then discovered domaining and the money to be made and was very intrigued and decided to jump on board, still only part time and mainly as a hobby.

Example, couple weeks ago. I mentioned to a person, TERMINATOR vs ROBOCOP video on YouTube.com is edited so good, that it deserves an OSCAR!

He then jumped on his seat, got on Google, and typed in the box field : YouTube.com

Even though I told him, YouTube.com - this user like majority of them, still use Google.com to get access to YouTube.com , he did not search for YOU TUBE, he searched for YOUTUBE.com

Google.com, (search engines) are your best friend as a Domainer. Use them well and you will be rewarded with more Traffic then you can imagine!

Yes, Type In traffic is important. But Search Engine Traffic is more Powerful! Since they are Dominating the Search Database Online.
YES, Exactly the main problem I have with my students when teaching them Webdesign.

Getting them to use the browser bar instead of google, when searching for names just registered.

As domainers ,a lot get stuck in the type-in mentality.

I started this game with a free name
No money ,but soon realised that google loves subdomains nearly as much as Domains themselves. I created a few sites with subdomains from my name.
6 months of Google adsense gave me my first payout and enough to buy a couple of REAL names.
3 years later , 200+ names , & still a lot of Subdomains.

Biggest tips for newcomers
Any name can make money, just sometimes it needs lateral thinking.
Don't follow the leaders, they can afford to lose money.
You can make easy money parking names, but only if you own the parking website.
Advertising is not an expense, it is an investment.
Patience is a virtue
Buy cheap, sell higher is a basic concept often forgotten.

I've learned more about the domain biz in the past month here at NamePros than in the past 10 years. One of the most interesting things so far is the good, bad and ugly about domain parking.

I think many people use Gmail to deflect and filter spam. The instant you put your ISP email or personal server email into whois, you become a spam magnet and it happens quickly and in fantastic volume. It's much worse now than only a couple years ago.

I think it's time for an overhaul of rules in general to protect domain owners from whois harvesters. The internet lost its innocence a long time ago. Regulated whois privacy is needed now. For domains that need protection I will be taking my business to registrars who bundle whois protection cheaply for all qualifying registrations. OpenSRS is doing this.

Please Sir, may i ask a question? Loving this thread so far. My question is, two questions actually.

Is it preferable to have WHOIS privacy on or off?,

and the second is,

Do you recommend having all your domains at one register, or spreading them out with 2 or more?

Thankyou.

Simple answer is OFF. If you are a Domainer who wants to sell domains. Why would you turn it ON?
I agree that businesses and public enterprises should have public whois records for validating who what and where. But it's not right for everybody across the board. There are smart reasons to do it and smart reasons not to.
Quote:
Turning it ON will scare buyers away.
Again, not for everybody across the board. For the kind of money you're talking about buyers and sellers can and should be validated in other ways besides their whois info.
Quote:
...a well respected Domainer who was recently offered $90 million...If he had Privacy turned on, he would have lost a good chunk of profit.
whois protection uses masked records that are relayed. Real contacts remain on record and domain owners can always be contacted by potential buyers (via email, fax or letter) while their real records are secured. Anybody who misses a $90M offer is either in a coma or goofed up the real records.

Nobody asked for this kind of hostility either:

Btw -- I didn't mean to start a fire here. I appreciate the time you are taking to help people out. I don't disagree with you except when you implied a sale could be missed with privacy on.
