How does the level of a domain effect things?

Hi there! I'm new to web development and was wondering:

How does the level of a domain effect things. Just say I was going to register a .net of a keyphrase that google gets 74000 hits a months - would this be a good investment? Obviously it would depend on what the site and what it offers, but generally, how less good is a .net compared to a .com?

Thanks!

^ Obviously I mean with regard to natural hit potential.
