Question How long should i wait before selling?

Hey everyone, I am very new to domaining. I've been doing lots of reading and I think it's about time to start testing the water.

I'm thinking about developing a website and flipping it. However, I don't know what sort of revenue or traffic I would need in order to make the website sell at low xxx. As well, when people list their revenue in the marketplace, does it mean the money they earn from affiliate marketing?

I'm always thankful of advice!

usually when they list their earnings they state it where it's coming from complete with screen shots.

Hi hydeus,
Usually when selling a domain based on traffic/earnings the longer the period of consistent stats you can show the better. Prospective buyers also like to know where the traffic is coming from as well as sales/earnings.
Affiliate marketing is just one of the possibilities to monetize a site - you would take screen shots of your sites different revenue streams over as long a period of time as possible to show consistent revenue or even better steady revenue growth.
Good luck with your website

It depends on how long you will attract enough visitors and the earnings that a potential buyer might like.

In my case i have a blog for a year now that i have a plan of selling maybe next year, i have to increase the visitor and earnings before selling it.

It takes patience and hardwork.

You can flip websites within one month or even one week if you have unique content (copyscape passed) and monetized for e.g. with amazon, ebay, adsense etc.,

Then you might realise a better selling price if you can show consistent traffic and revenue over several months. Then you can ask for several months revenue for your website.

If i was to flip a website within a month or a week, what would my price be based on? I know people sell their site based on 1 month's and flip for 12 month's revenue. would this be a correct method?

Generally, the longer you wait, the better. People want to see consistent stats. Buyers want to be sure that your traffic is normal and not a sudden influx from buying traffic bots or something. They also want to know where it is from for the same reason.

Flipping a website within a week is a rarity. You would have to work hard and fast, and the website would need to be very unique and. . .awesome.

Domaining is not an exact science. It really just depends on who is interested in your project. Obviously revenue is important, but if someone sees great potential in your site, the price could be much more. A lot of research and trial and error is involved. A lot of domains are sold on a "best offer" basis since setting a fixed price could mean selling yourself short. . .or too high.

If your intentions are too make websites and flip them, I think you are looking at a 1week to 1 month development period and then 2-3 months of traffic accumulation. If you put this much time into it, and your idea is good, the profit will be well worth it. Obviously this kind of practice is not for someone who is looking to use the internet as a homelessness-prevention resource. When it comes to domaining and internet marketing, the rich get richer.

Example:
Spend:
$8 on a domain.
$24 on 3 months hosting
$150ish for fancy forum license
$100 to have a bunch of people post on your new forum to get it started
$50 on advertising
$50 on website design so it's purty
Total: $400ish.

Once you get around to the middle of month 3, you would put your domain and forum content for sale, including the forum license and whatnot. Also, if you have good ads on your site, hopefully by month 3 the site will have at least halfway paid for itself. More than likely, you could get AT LEAST $1000 for the license, domain, and website. So that's $600 profit not including the money made back with advertising. To be honest, that's a worst case scenario, though. If your idea is really ingenuitive and your forum does a lot of cool things, you could get any $xxxx for it. On the other hand, you could just wait a few more months, and as the site becomes more popular, the value will increase. There are forums today worth $300,000 to $15,000,000.

But that's just one example. And there are enough forums already.

The only limit to what you get from the internet is your creativity.

Good luck with your stuff!
