Some domains registers will allow you to register and "test" a domain, if you don't want to keep it after 5 days, the domain register will fully refund you.

But I think I heard that ICAN is not going to allow domain tasting anymore, but I can't confirm this.

As far as I know ICANN is stopping the practice. I asked Pool about their system and was told it would be ending in June.
