I guess the title asks it all. What is the importance of Unique Views and what is it?

"Unique views" means how many different visitors viewed your domain/page. Repeat visitors are not counted in this statistic.

Its important because its a metric to measure how many different people are viewing your domain/page. If you have with a fair amount of unique views then it may have some value.

just to add on what josh said, "unique views" usually refers to different visitors who have visited your page in the last 24 hours. so if i visit your page on monday and friday, you would have 2 unique views from me, even though i am only one person.

Different places count uniques differently, some parking companies won't count foreign traffic as a unique visitor, others have different limitations on how frequent a repeat visit has to be in order to be considered non-unique. So it depends on who is using the term to some extent.
