Expired but unavailable?

Hi,
I've found a domain name that interests me. The whois information states the following:

Record last updated on 07-Jan-2008.
Record expires on 03-Jan-2008.
Record created on 03-Jan-2004.

Upon visiting the website, it says the following:

The domain "domain name here" has expired. Please contact your domain name registration service provider for further assistance. If you need help identifying your service provider, visit http://domainhelp.tucows.com.

and in another part of the whois it says the following:

Created: 2004-01-03
Expires: 2009-01-03
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-newbies/425279-expired-but-unavailable.html
Name Server: NS1.RENEWYOURNAME.NET (has 98,965 domains)
Name Server: NS2.RENEWYOURNAME.NET

Yet above it says it has already expired. Does anyone know what is going on? And if the website will become available shortly or not?

Looks like it got renewed or registered.

After a domain expires, its holded during some time by the registrant company, during this time, the domain is expired but unable to register, and the 'owner' has the chance to register it again paying an extra free, like a penalty. I guess thats what happening with the domain you mention.

Im also waiting for a domain to be released, i got a message saying its expired and that will be deleted in some days.

ps: dont worry, according to the expiration dates, we arent talking about the same domain

Ah, I thought it was something like that. Do you know how long these holding periods last usually. Is it around a month?

30 days is standard but i don't think it is always the case
