API? Where to start?

I am heard lots of great things about using API as a domainer.

I was told by my account manager that I should use their API because I have a great portfolio and it will be easier to manager?

Could anyone shed some light on what the benefits are? How would I implement this? Etc ...

Anything would help to get started.
Thanks!

API (application programming interface) is a general term and it applies to an array of things. Example, Windows has its own API, and you can modify it to customize your version of Windows. You could use programming languages like C# and VB as well to interface with the windows API. API is a bit hard to explain for me... but its basically a way to interface with pre existing code or programs.

I don't know which API you are talking about (there are millions) but I am assuming you are talking about the Google API. Using this you can encorperate google searches in your page, let them host your email, use their page creator, encorperate google maps, and many more features on your website with very little knowledge. To read more about Google API, check out http://code.google.com/ here you can read more info.

Using the code Google already has made, can make your website awesome. You can create everything from a calendar, blog, or social networking site in no time

Hope this helps

codemerc is on a distinguished road

You're presumably talking about the API for your domain registrar, enom, moniker etc?

The API allows you to directly access features of your account withought having to go through the web interface provided by your registrar. Via the API you can do such things as check for availability, register domains, change DNS servers, change contact details....

Of course you need something to talk to the API, either a script running on a server or a program running on your PC. Typically these are custom coded to do whatever it is you want it to do.

With a large portfolio you might ,for instance, want something to easily change DNS servers if you need to change hosting or parking without having to log in find the right page enter DNS servers ....

Of course you could use the API to set-up your own domain reseller site..

You can use the API they provide, but then if there is a problem , it will be your responsibility. Your registrars user interface may not be user friendly, but they probably have more secure servers.

Lightbulb

Yes, API allows you to integrate to the Registrar domain registration system, so that domain registration services are available in your website/ domain storefront. API is also flexible in terms of the look & feel as well as allows customization and using your own subscribed payment gateway.

However, there is another option which is more straight forward and for easier integration. For example, in WebNIC we do have Hosted Private Label (HPL). Limited customization, but easier integration also use the payment gateway that webnic uses.

Hope this helps enlighten!
