How many is too many?

Hi, everyone

I got into domaining two months ago. How many domains would you recommend to start with for a newbie? I am currently have around 25 domains. Should I set a limit for myself?

Yes,

Be carefull you dont over reg,

Can become costly,
Set out an amount of money you can afford in reg fees each year,

Then if you have a few $$ more think about buying a few good names from other resellers and hope for the best.

I use to register 5-7 names a day for about 3 months straight.

Got to much for me trying to track them all,

Now down to a nice~450

It only takes 1 name for a sale.

25 seems ok now but try selling some first before you buy more.

It's all a question of balance. If at least your portfolio is self-sustaining (enough PPC revenue to pay for reg fee) you are OK. Otherwise don't overspend. There is no magic formula but it all boils down to cash flow. Keep track of how much each names costs and earns then decide whether to keep.

Dont do what I did when I first started. Register a bunch of crappy names I thought were good because somewhere, someone, one day, will want them. you need to register/buy domains that get traffic if your going to park, develop or point to an existing developed site. The secret to getting these names is another story.

It depends on each domainer.
Are you a reseller or invester?
What's your budget?
How much can you afford per month?

In my case, I buy/register for pure investment purpose.
I don't pay much attention to parked domains.
I rarely sell to domainer.

I rarely drop domains once I got'em.
I don't mind if my domains don't sell for years.
I consider them as my retirement funds.

So, again, it depend on your own situation and there is
no such thing as too many as long as you can afford it.

I believe it will get harder and harder to find ok domains to
register or buy at good price as more and more people find out
about domain business.

Register/Buy as many as you can AFFORD while you can

Exactly. It's really hard to be sure what's good and what isn't...Maybe a sticky on this with some pointers?

I only set a limit with brandable generics that dont earn income if the names have traffic and income why limit them.

I have been doing this for 6 yrs,but stopped 2 yrs ago,and started up this past July.I have about 400 names,and I feel good about over half of them.I have them mostly for investment,but it always makes me feel good to sell one now and then

I think putting a limit on how many domains you register is a great idea. It is best not to get carried away in the beginning. Get a feel for the market and see what domains sell and which ones dont. The last thing you want to do is get carried away with registrations. Once you register 100 domains, your stuck with them until someone buys them. You need to remember that whatever you register has to be renewed at the end of the year if they dont sell unless you decide to let them drop. If you have to let domains drop, what did you gain by registering them all? Probably nothing right? Your best bet is to start off small and play it safe in the beginning. Also look into parking pages. Many NamePro users try to generate revenue off the domains they own until someone buys them. This way you can try to earn back the money you spent registering the domains to begin with.

instead of a common newbie pattern like hand regging 100 names at $8 for $800.

Buy the best name you can find for $800 and put a site on it and work at that for 6 months...if it makes money buy #2 or sell it for $1000 and repeat.

I wont really recommend that for a newbie. The risks involved there is way too much. If in case THAT domain name that you develop the site on is not a very good one you not just lose that huge sum you spent on the domain but also all that valuable time on developing the site.
I would suggest to start small with hand regging and buying a few low cost domains from auctions an stuff and then slowly move up the ladder.

It's like gambling..don't spend what you don't intend to lose.

If you can't afford the renewal fees year after year...don't register the domain. Consider ANY registration should be worth at least 5x it's renewal fee. If you aren't willing to spend $40 to renew the name for 5 years it's probably not a name worth even registering.

Also I advise development. Sitting around waiting to sell a domain is boring. Create a project and try and make a site. You might be successful and a site is easily worth 10x more than domain alone.
