If you didn't know, there is a search bar on the top right hand corner of the Namepros page. Search for anything on Namepros. There are probably more resources on domaining here than anywhere else.

fatter is on a distinguished road

Heres an earlier post i made take it or leave it

I regged 50 domain names now what do I do?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We see more and more questions like this on the boards, to all the new domainers dont reg any names until you research what names to get. Learn how to use overture, vurr and other search statistic sites, just because a phrase is mentioned 200,000 times in google doesnt mean it is worth a nickle if it is taken out of context. As a new domainer you want to reg names that people actually search for and is an actual product or service, with the exception of future industry names which you usually just have to reg and hope they pan out. There are still names that get small traffic where income can be made, so before you make up 100 names like pinkzebra.com jumpingonaroof.com just remmember there are millions of people who are just as creative as you doing the same thing, and just because you see a crappy madeup name sell for x,xxx and think you can be more creative they are a cost you must carry for years till a sale may or may not develop. After you reg some names with traffic that you earn money with then you can add a few madeup brandables.

Just my 2 cents If you dont like my advice just ignore it and go with your plan. Many of us have gone down that road and learned a lesson you can research more and not make the same mistakes.
good luck

gargoyles is an unknown quantity at this point

Greetings,

I've been doing this for 2 years. I haven't seen a book that walks you through the process. But most of the advice given here is good. Here are some lines you may want to think about first that could save you some headaches.

For Non-Drop domains

1) First check to see if a domains available. Usually you can use whois.sc and see what domain names are available and what extensions may be as well. You will want to check overture tool which tells you roughly how many people searched the keywords that month and see if there is a logical variation that makes sense and is searched heavily. This is important since keywords drive your traffic, but more important is the content the site provides. Keyword density (how many times a keyword is used properly inflates the page rank higher) is also crucial.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=409481

* Most 1, 2, 3 and 4 letter or short word domains are gone. You will pay a fortune to get them. So a good 4 or 5 letter domain is worth a shot. Some folks sell their names on this site and i've seen some good names up for grabs fairly reasonable.

2) Check the trademark and patent office to make sure your domain name wouldn't be interferring with intellectual property rights. This could cost you both the domain and money if you infringe on them. It takes about 10 - 15 minutes to do but worth the piece of mind. visit www.uspto.gov and search both trademarks and patents. Anything close (even remotely) could pose a threat.

3) Ask yourself, Why would someone else want to buy it from me? What makes anyone want the domain name?

4) Drops are great ways to get good names, but there can be a little competition that might drive the good names up in price. So be realistic in the pricing of a domain and realize that if a site name is popular and dropping; chances are there will be a swarm of domainers waiting in the same waters for it to hit.

Check Sedo.com for domain names as well as TDNAM.com both have bargains every so often. Sedo is also a great place to list your names for sale for free as well as park for extra $. Sedo only takes a percentage once the name sells. Moniker is popular as well.

Good luck,
G

start right here in this section, read all sticky threads and more, read namepros for the next couple weeks, read dnjournal to see whats been sold, try to understand why domain was sold at this or that price, and ASK QUESTIONS!! Do not buy anything for the next 2 weeks, and enjoy reading.

Just read read and read here @ namepros and for the startup handreg a few good looking domains and try to sell them if you can, it would give you some sort of experience about domain reseller market that what sells here, later move on to aftermarket and buy some generic traffic domains .. Namepros is the best place to learn about this industry.
