Hoping you all might help me debrief after a recent auction ...

I bid on the following names and the winning prices are indicated:

Concomitant.com - $150 > 16,800,000 google results no ads
Exigency.com - $230 > 606,000 google results no ads
CuticleRemovers.com - $224 > 14,600 google results with ads
SoftPillows.com - $276 > 93,700 google results with ads
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-newbies/389560-trying-to-learn.html

I wound up winning SoftPillows.com and letting the others go.

I have some regret letting CuticleRemovers.com go, but in the end I decided that its not such a common implement (I wouldn't even think to type that - CuticleScissors seems more familiar).

And then while the single words were tempting, in the end I really don't understand why they have value - they are not exactly part of our daily vernacular and potentially even hard to sell.

Anyway, not looking for validation, but rather some honest assessments on my thought process today.

Hey Locomo,

Thanks for sharing with us your thought process. I guess it all boils down to what you wish to do with the domain. Do you want to just park it and put ads on it? Or do you want to actually develop it, put content on it, and make money either from advertisements or from selling things on it.

As far as the domains you were bidding on goes, I'd say you made the right choice in getting the Pillows domain. Everyone love pillows! It is also easiest to spell and remember out of those domains in my opinion.

But again, the question is, what are you planning on doing with your pillow domain? If you just want to purchace a domain that google shows ads for, there are plenty of domains out there that would suffice for this - dont be fooled into thinking all the good ones are taken, you just have to get creative sometimes... like PillowZilla or someting (example, you know what I mean). But my point is, if you just want a domain that google will show ads for and have high search results, you can search a while and get a .com for $8 and save spending hundreds.

Now, since you have the domain already, what are you going to do with it? you have 3 options (in my opinion):
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=389560
1. Keep it and try to sell the domain name later for more money to a company that sells pillows or random entity
2. Park it. This will put ads on it and if someone types softpillows.com or finds it in search, they go to your site and see nothing but ads and you make money
3. Develop it.

Option 3 with this domain is probably the best option. If you have to team up with a pillow maker, and sell their products and take a % of the sale this could be very proffitable. I would try to find a small local pillow manufactuer - they are all over, or partner up with one of those "as seen on tv" late night pillow specials. Say you sell 100 pillows a month, and you get $5 a sale thats $500 a month!

You probably do have a plan on what to do with it, I am just rambling now. But yes, your thought process was good. I don't even know how to spell Cuticle Remover (hehe).

Good job, out of the ones listed, you got the best one in my opinion.

the only thing I'm still unclear about is the possible value of single word .com (exigency,com) addresses - especially if the word itself is a bit esoteric. I would understand of course if the right end user wanted it - like a restaurant called The Exigency (what kind of food would that be!?!)

but otherwise, do these names have value for reasons I'm not aware of ??
