DNS = Domain Name Server/Service

I'm sure someone can come up with a technical explanation for you. But in layman's language, Dns is what allows your domain name (such as bmx.com ) to be translated to its actual IP (such as 211.50.75.104 ) location on the internet.

Why do you ask?

domain name system

<networking> (DNS) A general-purpose distributed, replicated,
data query service chiefly used on Internet for translating
hostnames into Internet addresses. Also, the style of
hostname used on the Internet, though such a name is
properly called a fully qualified domain name. DNS can be
configured to use a sequence of name servers, based on the
domains in the name being looked for, until a match is found.

What is the Domain Name System?

The Domain Name System (DNS) helps users to find their way around the Internet. Every computer on the Internet has a unique address – just like a telephone number – which is a rather complicated string of numbers. It is called its "IP address" (IP stands for "Internet Protocol").

But it is hard to remember everyone's IP address. The DNS makes it easier by allowing a familiar string of letters (the "domain name") to be used instead of the arcane IP address. So instead of typing 192.0.38.69, you can type www.icann.org It is a "mnemonic" device that makes addresses easier to remember.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-newbies/37497-dns.html

Translating the name into the IP address is called "resolving the domain name." The goal of the DNS is for any Internet user any place in the world to reach a specific website IP address by entering its domain name. Domain names are also used for reaching e-mail addresses and for other Internet applications.

A question if anyone can answer: if someone changes
their domain's DNS at 10AM, does it reach the 12PM
or 12AM root zone update?

How fast do registrars send commands to record
these changes at the zone level?
