Addicted To Buying Domains

Just curious to what new domainers in the biz have made the mistake of spending hours in front of a computer finding and registering domains that you feel VERY bad about after the fact.

I just registered a ton of single word cc's and a few others and am sure I can sell them at a bit over reg cost but the gamble is killing me!

I know research the market before purchasing etc. but I cant fight my gut feeling when I see that special name.....I HAVE TO BUY IT!

Any long time domainers have any words of encouragment/advice on this?

You can take this quiz...I posted it a while ago, but it's a pretty good measure.

IMO... don't build a portfolio just on .cc or other exotic TLDs.
It does not hurt having a few but they are not liquid at all, and you really need very strong keywords and a motivated end user to sell them.
Personally my portfolio is at least 70% .com with a healthy mix of .net/.org/.info European ccTLDs. Stay with the mainstream extensions if you are hoping for a resale

Shut down your computer.

Now, there are many domainers getting almost every domain out there...

If you can't stop you from buying everything, try to buy domains with
traffic (typo's, expired with traffic and so on).

At least you won't waste your money.

Good Luck.

I used to be a little addicted too, fortunatly a lack of money cut that short and now im not too bad

Although I do get the urges now and then, I have bought a few domains in the past where ive thought "what was I thinking?" a few days after lol.

That's how I was when I first started. Now I started buying more domains on the 2nd market.... I think it would've been cheaper to stick with hand reg'in . Lol. But much, much higher quality domains justify the price tag sometimes.

If you speak another language, check out IDNs. Those would be a better investment in most cases.

After 2 years at this I can tell you with certainty you will NOT be addicted to renewals!
In fact renewals may cure you of your habit.
Good Luck.

I would say try and sell some of the domains from your existing portfolio and then you will yourself get a feeling how much you need to buy and how much you need to sell. Moreover you will also stay away from some domain names even if you have a feeling of registering them.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=374006

When some sales don't go as imagined we do understand where the domain name market is moving to.

I did made some mistakes one common one was registering lots of .infos at 0.99 It did earned a bit in parking but not worth the time wasted on it.

After one year it was time for a renewal and from that day I did learnt some good lessons.

yeah, I was thinking that renewing is going to blow. I really think its cool how everyone seems to have gone through the same mess in the beginning, just proves that there is a system to follow that works! Anyhow, I am pumped to be stepping into this area of the business, its not only fun but gets your blood moving at times.
