I really would love to see a huge return on investment so in that manner, yes, I am in it for the money

But I also really enjoy coming up with new, unregistered domain names. Especially making up my own words or ideas. I kind of see having the domain name as proving that it was my idea.. for some things..
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-newbies/350115-why-do-you-register-domain-names.html

Also I think it's awsome that some of the names and website ideas I've come up with and sold are now websites with bright futures. I feel like I am, in some small way, making my mark on society and the internet.

And finally, I just don't wanna miss out on something.. LOL

For me at first..it was something that I had to do, needed a domain to move my free site too! Then it became a way to make extra money..now I enjoy the challenge and the thrill of finding a good paying keyword domain or a good traffic expired domain or even out bidding someone for a domain! I quess I am a Domainaholic (is there a 12 step meeting near!)

Spending my kids inheritance. I'm sure they would just waste it anyways.

Well said! also spending my kids inheritance but there is a significant ROI so guess if I croak it they are the winners not losers on that! and we also develop a significant % of names (currently 9%) and its looking pretty damn fine ..

Aside from that .. defensive reg's re our online operations and its an interesting and challenging "space" that merits the investment

Just my view

By selling domains I collected in the past I have been able to afford a decent domain name for a website that I'm about to develop. I believe that the prices on domains will continue to rise as the internet grows.

So it is always good to have some domains to "trade" for that particular name, when you finally decide what you want to develop.
