Question Any advice for a total novice?

Hello!

Would anyone be willing to offer some advice that could help me to learn more about this business? What reading materials or resources would you suggest to provide some basic knowledge? What’s a good way to get started, perhaps as a hobby that could build into something?

I find this all very interesting and I am willing to do the homework.

Any suggestions?

reading materials:
you found it already: namepros!

way to get started:
buy one domain, related to something you already know about and develop a site around it. don't go out and register / buy a whole heap of domains right away.

I would first get a domain name.

You can read all about this stuff but if you do not have any way to put the information in context it may not be that helpful.

Also get a domain that get free hosting/email so you can really get going and get the most out of it.

I think some great advice so far. I would also recommend asking questions, a lot. There is so much in this industry and the people who do the best are the people who know the most....

My best advice for a "newbie" - Dont buy anything for atleast 2 weeks. Read the forum, find out what makes a domain valueable and why. Find a niche that you want to be good at and learn. This way you can avoid spending money recklessly on domains that almost certainly have no value!

Good luck and welcome to NamePros!

I suppose i take the chance to add 2 things to the list:

1, BEFORE you think about buying a domain, aside from all the above, also read the legal section of NP, there's a wealth of information regarding Trademarks and other legal situations. Definitely VERY valid lessons to be learned there.

2, After you've made your first purchase and you think about developing, bring your site to the "Web Design Review" thread. You're getting an honest opinion there and tons of feedback that's actually free of charge.

Welcome to NP.

1) Buy quality, not quantity. Be prepared to spend 3,000 to 10,000 for a great name.

2) Keep good records.

3) Don't be afraid to make a low ball offer, you can always offer more.

4) If a domain is not registered, ask yourself why..

5) Search Snapnames, pool, enom, godaddy and tucows for good domains.

6) .net is worth about 1/10 of .com

7) 1/10 of a million $ is a lot of

Spread your registrations out if possible so you won't have all your renewals due around the same time. I have learned this lesson the hard way

Keep reading everything you can on NamePros and try and learn as much as possible before registering too many domains. I started out with a very small budget which I am thankful for as I registered many terrible names to start with and would have just lost most of the money if I had more. It is true that you are better off investing in quality rather than quantity - but only if you are experienced enough to know you are getting a good deal.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, there are plenty of members in this forum that are only too happy to help.

Keeping good records is a must, you need to know exactly how much a domain has cost you, how long you have owned it, which registrar it is registered with etc. to be able to make educated decisions when approached with offers.

Diversification is good but you should also have a specialty niche that you know a lot about and enjoy. Eg. I have most of my capital invested in LLLL.com domains as I have spent a huge amount of time researching these names and now own hundreds.

Enjoy yourself, it's a great area to be in and I have had a fun journey so far and look forward to many years to come.

This is a very generous forum! Thanks to everyone that has replied.

I think some of the best advise is to hang around namepros and get myself edu-macated, before I jump inot the deep end of the pool.

My experience is in strategic marketing planning with 15 years of ad agency background (almost all print and media). My primary responsibility was keeping the creative team on task and making sure that the campaigns they created were on task and appropriate for our client's marketing strategies and goals. Although semi-retired, I still dabble and do a consult here and there.

Hopefully, I can contribute to this forum with some general marketing knowledge. I look forward to hanging around and checking things out.

Thanks again.

diegoid is on a distinguished road

Get Domains with Traffic (Type-In, Typo, Expired with Traffic).
You can make them cash very fast.

If you don't want to get them with traffic, get what it's called overture terms + ext.

You may not understand this now, but you will in some days/weeks.

Good Luck!
