Many questions!

I am new to the world of buying/selling domain names. I don't event know where to start. I have read articles about this business and it all seems good. What are the ups and downs of buying and selling domain names? What happens when you park domain names. When you park your domain name, how is it that you get paid for it? Who payes? Are there resources I can be directed to get more info regarding this business. This all seems to easy but yet, there is a lot of competition. Is it better to create your own domain name instead of buying?

Thanks

These days it seems that you have to spend more to make more, generally speaking, compete for good names at places like Pool.com and SnapNames.com against some of the big guns in the biz.

You can still get lucky with hand regged names but the chances are slim and profit is usually on the lower side as well, its more so a gamble vs top drops.

When you park your name say at Sedo, they pay you per click on your parking page ads, the advertisers pay them and they inturn give you a very, very small portion.

Things have certainly changed since I started back in 2003, a whole different game... I cant compete against the big guys myself so I just dabble now and then.

By posting in NP I think you already made a good start. Spend some time here and you will learn a lot.

1. The ups/downs of this business depends on how good you are able to speculate the value of a domain name. If you are good at it you are on the upside and if you are not so good you are on the down side. When you spend time here you will naturally become good.

2. Going for new registration is not all that lucrative. Most of the good domains are already gone. But rarely as Tippy has said you might get lucky.

The key to this domaining world is your knowledge on the value of the domains and a bit of luck.

Just a few info from my observations.

Everyone were new when they started. Good Luck.

Many Parking Companies pay via PayPal when you reach a min. ($20 in
many cases). Example of a Parking Comapany: NameDrive.com

----

If you want to start with this, try to register domains with traffic:

A) Type-In Domains
B) Typo Domains
C) Expired Domains with Traffic.

Good Luck.

How long does it usually take to make $20.00 with a parked domain. Is it a week, a month or a couple of months for each domain?

Just curious to see if it is really worthwhile keeping the domain name if you aren't doing anything with it.

Answer it's simple: Depends on the traffic and the topic of your page.

Here are some sites that you may find useful, I found them here on NP before and had them bookmarked:

http://www.namenewbie.com/
guide to domains for newbies

http://dnjournal.com/
They have lots of useful links under the resources page

http://www.domainsellingtips.com/parking_reviews
Reviews different parking companies, It was last updated in Feb. I still suggest trying the companies out yourself though. I didn't and parked mine for a year at one company. Then I found NP and tried another company. In the last month I've made half of what I made in 6 months compared to the old company!

Good luck!
