They are links to your site on another site.

An example would be namepros.com linking to google.com. This would give google.com a backlink.

One good tool for figuring how many backlinks your site has and what they are is http://www.backlinkwatch.com/

A link coming from other site to your site can be called as backlink.

Multiple links from multiple sites = Backlink(s)

It can also be called incoming links.
