Beginner questions.

Hi people,
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-newbies/293858-beginner-questions.html

I've been reading about 'domaining' for some days (read the faqs on NameFAQs) but I still don't get the whole thing. I am kinda lost right now.

First, can anybody explain me the concept behind the pay-per-click (or pay-per-traffic) ?

I would like to buy a couple of domain names, to get me started. I just don't know HOW I can be paid for it. How can parking a domain name will actually 'make money' ? Who makes money out of that in the long run? I mean ... if 100 users clicks on one of my webpages in a day, the cash is coming from who? And why? It must be also profitable for the other part? But how?

I am a web developer and I really want to try it out, and market a product and try to make money out of it. If someone could guide me in better detail than the articles I've been reading. My problem is not working it out ; i won't need help for that. I just want to know more about the 'inner workings' of that business, how can we actually make money out of it.

Maybe that sounds stupid but I still don't understand the whole thing.

Thanks a lot for your support guys, I appreciate.

Best regards,

welcome!!

ok... parking money comes from:
1) advertisers pay google/yahoo to put up their ads (on search engine results pages, adsense, ypn, etc)
2) parking companies put the ads supposedly for adsense/ypn onto parking pages
3) when someone clicks an ad from your parking page, the money spent from advertisers gets split up between google/yahoo, parking company, and you.

btw, if you're a web developer, you're likely to make much more than from parking. the only bonus is that parking is (supposedly) residual.

Right exactly as shockie said.

Now how do you get people to come to a domain you bought?

Well, it's difficult if it was something like bobswineshop.com, but imagine that you own candy.com for a moment.

People will often type in what they are searching for and add a .com i.e shoes.com, cars.com bluecars.com etc.

So if you own a really good domain you can get visitors and those visitors may click on ads that are placed at the domain (as shockie mentioned).
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=293858

Therefore if you are looking to make money from parked domains it is vital to buy domains of high quality and not just any old domain.

You can also make money from domains but registering one and selling it. Again this all is up to the worth of the domain.

If I registered thegoodbadstorythatneverended.com I would have a hard time finding a buyer. But if I registered forumburst.com (one I recently sold for $14 - nothing big mind you compared to other domainers) selling it would be easier because others could use the domain.

A variant of the above method is buying domains from domainers and then reselling them. i.e. buy candy.com for $100000 and sell it for $150000 etc.

I hoped that explained some different things you can do with domains. Don't be fooled it isn't easy and it takes a lot of work to find buyers. This is not a get rich quick idea. And it takes money to make money . . . but that doesn't mean you can't do it.

Give it a try. . . go slow . . .and have fun!

Take care also when 'promoting' any domain name you have parked. Most parking companies don't allow promotion of your parked domain name. This is the relevant para. from Sedo's terms :-
"Domain owner may not generate traffic to their domain name(s) or clicks on advertising links by any of the following methods: listings on newsgroups or discussion boards (with the exception of "domain for sale" postings), bulk emailing, ICQ postings, or chat room/IRC postings, iframes, zero pixel frames, hitbots, clickbots, spiders, CGI scripts, java-scripts, or any other similar method."

The terms seem to be the same for most parking cos. but ParkedNames told me promotion was OK but you mustn't ask people to click on the ads.
So getting peolpe to visit your parked site is difficult, which is why generic names are imprtant for the reasons explained by skinny.

Thanks guys for the replies. I understand better now.

So, I guess domain name parking isn't the 'best' choice to me ? If I am developing my own web pages, I could do the advertising job myself ? But how?

I mean, I have to put ads on my websites? But where do I find them ? And how can I get paid for users clicking on the ads i've put on my website ?

I prefer the idea of choosing something to advertise and try to generate traffic myself on my website(s). But I really have no idea how to start (correctly and safely).

I would have to find a hoster to host my websites first, I guess. If you guys have suggestions, they are more than welcome.

I also think that it would be a better experience to me if I have to design and market things myself. I'm aware that this isn't easy (mostly marketing) but I really want to try it out. I just don't know how to begin generating traffic out of my website (ads and affiliates programs), and also how to get paid (i need a paypal account, etc?)

Well, sorry this sounds like very noob questions, but I prefer answers from people that are actually in the business and can share their own experience than "get rich quick" or "buy this script and make 500$ a day" bulls*** articles. :-)

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate your help on getting me started.

Best regards

best advice I can give ya is create a site about something you like or know about, this way if it takes a while to make money with the site it is no big deal as you are interested in the content and enjoy working on it, then when it starts to make money you can consider that a nice bonus, if you set out to only make a site to make money with a lot of times you will find 6 months down the road when your earnings are not what you expected and you are not really interested in the content you will be upset and looking to sell it for a few dollars, stick with what you know or what you enjoy and it makes things more pleasant....

Great advice given by SpareDomains especially about content! Search engines love updated and regular content! Also what I would do is to promote the your site heavily..things that I do (free) are posting my site in my forum signature (if allowed by TOS), email signature (I don't recommend Spam email), in my profile at (chatroom, forums, groups etc.) submit my site to related directories (etc), add my site link to my blog, even post about my site in my blog..I have just listed a few of free things to that I do to promote my sites..
