It depends on your use. Do you plan to resell domains to others directly, through a hosting service, or just use it for yourself at good pricing. Most die-hards seem to prefer the Enom reseller accounts at $6.95, but you have to buy an existing one or pony up $6950 to get a new one. Some use WildWest (godaddy), but I don't like their policies or interface. If for personal use only or lower volume, some retail accounts are really a better deal.

For a while they were one of the last to have a registrant transfer fee. They did away with that, but still have a 60 day registrar transfer hold if the registrant name changes.

Directi's pricing is not bad. But currently, their system is unstable due to recent upgrade of their control panel.

Directi has reseller accounts with prices from $6.49 to $6.99 based on volume with an annual reseller fee. It takes $12k to get the $6.49 price on all the major tld's, or $3k for com/net/org. I've never used them, so I don't know how friendly their policies are to resellers, but would like to hear from users. http://www.directi.com/resellers/pricing/

Godaddy reseller accounts are under $7, but I dont' like their polices, interface, or add-on prices you have to watch for.

Registerfly recently announced it will be coming out with DNS only accounts, that unlike enom's $5.99 "name only" accounts
let you change the DNS to your own, or park it with someone else other than their own park page. Enom's is a good price, but useless for a reseller. I always use my own DNS servers, so the registerfly plan would work great for me since there is no volume commitment. I haven't seen anything that can beat this without $$$ commitment if you use your own DNS host, afternic, sedo, or fabulous. Here's the mailing they sent.

Quote:

$6.75 DNS Only Domains coming!

We are obsessed with getting the best deals for our clients. We are also looking for innovative ways to provide further value to our clients. We will be launching a new type of Discounting Program(in addition to FlyPacks).
The new DNS Only plan will work as follows

What you will get:

.com, .net, .org, .us, .info registrations will be $6.75 each
No Annual Membership required(unlike 49.00/ 99.00 other services charge)
No volume commitments

You can specify any DNS that you wish. Unlike other services you can actually use these discounted domains You can use these names like a regular domain such as internal domain pushing or sub-user account.

What is not included:

URL forwarding/Framing
META Tags
Dynamic DNS
E-mail Forwarding, Free e-mail account
Free Website
Advanced DNS settings
Summary:

If you purchase large numbers of domains and do not require value added features like forwarding or email forwarding the DNS Only names are PERFECT for you. You have the flexibility of using your own DNS/Name servers so your name will actually be useful. If you are a large domain holder consolidating your names to RegisterFly is even easier now.

We will be posting more information about the launch date for this service.
Anyone know of others?

If you would calculate interest in your money on that, Defintion of interest - time value of your money. Directi is a total rip off with the large deposits and is not the cheapest. In a matter of fact a $7 registrar with a $1000 deposit would be cheaper then Directi. With $12k sitting around, I collect way more then that extra $1.XX off my money market funds. Horrible deal.

Mainly, their 60 day registrar transfer hold if a name changes ownership. If you buy a name from someone there, you can't transfer for 60 days.

They were also one of the last to stop charging ownership transfer fees a while back, and it was not apparent except in fine print that I didn't see until I'd registered 80+ names there (it's gone now).

I don't understand how people ready to complain about GoDaddy mention something about add-ons, when they provide you the most necessary ones for free.

Godaddy is on sale for $6.95 right now. I would take advantage of that if I didn't have a reseller account. That is rock bottom pricing.

The $6.95 is for new registrations not renewals so in the long run you will still pay the norm with GD. Loss leaders can't keep on forever at low prices. Just wait, EV1 will raise prices again. Look at GoDaddy's overhead (advertising fees alone)...they can't be making any profit at $6.95.

They are losing money, they do about 120k-130k registrations per month with most of them com net probaly. They probably spend about 250k-350K per month in advertising for domain names. The numbers do not add up, they lose money on every name sold big time. They are also a bitch to transfer away from(sometimes you luck out with a few), I would avoid godaddy like the plague spend a dollar or two more at a better registrar

I have a DirectI account ($6.99) and an eNom account ($7.95/$5.95 etc.)

I find DirectI to be USABLE.. I like eNom better, and feel lucky to get a $7.95 for nothing. "Some day" I might get enough time and money to afford to "buy in" as an eNom ETP but not today...

NO reseller fee like GoDaddy/WWD at either.

DirectI is modifying their minimums or talking about it anyways. Right now it's a $75 minimum deposit to start buying at $6.95 and WhoIs.cart claims complete compatibility. There's still pulling teeth to get example approved open source API code. But as many say, "there's potential"... Very India centric though.

eNom is better from the start, minimum $100 deposit on whatever account you get, but unlike DirectI, all the GoDaddy creature features are included - DNS, redirects, etc.

Here's a chart from DirectI:

http://www.directi.com/resellers/comparsion-chart/

Note it doesn't include the charges for the value-adds which are included at GoDaddy, eNom.

Thanks for the info rabid_nerd I am going to open an account and try out their hosted reseller thing. Is there an annual charge for that or is that free? If it's free & hosted, oh boy time for another reseller account for me.

I don't consider GD's transfer away process as difficult at all. It has always been smooth for me. Also, you can't beat their prices, included add-ons, and support.
