Best Ways to Accept Payment

Just wondering when you have made a sale, without using a service, what are the best methods to accept payment? Say if you have a $1000 sale and you have previously been corresponding with the buyer by email, do you have them send a cashiers check? Paypal? Escrow? If escrow, what are the charges for a service like this and which services are better.

So by using bank wire, does that mean giving out personal account information? Is that secure?

There are a number of methods that are commonly used for domain payments, each has it's own pro's and con's.

If using PayPal, it's secure and quick, however, there is a charge for receiving payment, additionally, PayPal does NOT recognize Virtual Goods, so in the event that something went wrong, it would be hard to get your money back (read their TOS for more information).

If using escrow, both the buyer and seller are protected for fraudulent activities, like paypal, a service charge has to be paid to them. these charges could be paid wholly by the buyer, the seller or split 50/50 (you'd have to determine this with the buyer/seller before the transaction takes place). The service charge depends on the type of payment used, credit card payments are charged higher, wires are the cheapest (but you might get a charge from your bank).

In my opinion, direct wire transfer to a bank account without the use of 3rd party is very risky and not worth taking the risk.

Paypal is easy and fast. I think there is no charge if you have a personal account and the payer pays from paypal fund.

Thanks for the replies. I think I may just go with paypal for the future. I do have a clickbank account, but I don't see how it can be used for selling domain names. Maybe I'm missing something.

I am new to this domain selling thing. I received an unsolicited email last week for the purchase of an unused domain i've owned for over a year. Had no intention of selling it, until I was made this offer. Not sure if it will work out or not, but it has gotten me interested in what this is all about and I have been on this forum now for the past 3 days!!!

Cancer Survivorship
paypal for sales where you trust or know the buyer
escrow.com when you do not know the buyer or the transaction is for more money then you would care to take a chance on losing

For Paypal, they dont charge a commision depending on what you select for reason for payment, I believe there is Ebay auction, goods, services etc.

I believe if you choose Services - Paypal will NOT charge you a commision/Fee for that transaction...

I believe that's the withdrawal limit. I have been paid upto $1000 on my personal account. I don't think there is any monthly limit on how much u can recieve!

I just offered a domain to an end user in Indonesia, a country that Escrow.com doesn't support. Any suggestions about what I could propose to the buyer for payment? (I doubt they'll want to send a far-off stranger $XXXX in any non-escrowed way.)
