I would say go with:
MyBB (http://www.mybboard.com) if you were to go with a free solution.

If you're going with PHPbb, you at least have to use the alpha 3.x builds for it to be at least decent.

it is 1 minute work to set a forum up..

Get a hosting account with either the Fantastico script installer or the Elephante script installer and you can eaasily have PHPBB or SMF installed with the click of a couple buttons. Very convenient.

Well phpbb is definitely the most supported and has the most users. However, it is very vulnerable to spam - both signups and posting. Not sure whether the others mentioned are the same or not.

I use phpbb with little problem though.

There are also lots of free forum & host sites like the one mentioned above. If you are interested in that I can offer a few suggestions if you like.

Get a free hosting account at ej.am and use fantastico, then you can setup smf or a phpbb forum in minutes!
