What does happen when a domain expires?

The domain enters into the redemption period 12 days after the registration has expired. The redemption period is of 30 days during which the registrant may retrieve it from deletion and renew the registration.

Some domains then go to auction at places like tdnam, pool, or snapnames. If no one bids on them, they then re-enter the registration pool of available domains.
