Why did the .com become more popular then .net

was it the only thing offered when internet was growing ....i just dont understand why 1 TLD got the biggest popularity

.com was the first. It became the widely accepted form and others were created to give more room for expansion as the Internet grew. Others are catching on now and so you will see alot more use of the other TLD's as the .com names become harder and harder to obtain.

.com was i thin more easy to remember and write on a browser that is why i think .com became more popular

.COM is for commercial purposes and still most of the people believe in it.

and another thing is that .com is ".comunity" and .net is "network" is you buy a domain name and it's for information you should buy a .info it's all about the extension.

If I am not wrong .com was the first extension so people remember it more easily and many people tend to associate every domain name with a .com extension. I think .net and others are gaining popularity as not many good .com names are available now.

.com was not the first TLD created I believe the first TLD was .arpa. As far as I know was .com introduced in the beginning of January 1985 along with .net, .org, .mil, .gov and .edu. The intended use for .com was commercial activities, .net was intended for network infrastructure such as DNS servers and .org was intended for organizations and individuals. The other TLDs were assigned to the US government and educational purposes.

I believe the reason why .com has become the most popular TLD today is that many webmasters started in the end of the 90´s to use .com for all kind of purposes. Around the millennium when using the Internet become mainstream most people got used to .com and companies started to present them selves as .com firms with CompanyName.com. Today many users believe that all Internet addresses always ends in .com and when they look for a specific site or service, they will always try out .com before other extensions.

Many users will by habit type in a certain URL in .com so a site operating under another TLD, could loose traffic and sales to the .com site especially if they are about the same topic. At least the mentioned is some of the reasons why .com has become the most popular TLD.
