Protecting whois information?

How can I protect the information related to my domain from being displayed in a whois search.
For example,it displays the registrar and the nameservers of my domain.
How can I hide it?

you cannot hide the registrar and dns servers. the only thing that can be cloaked is the whois information, if your registrar offers this service.

Why would you want to hide it? I see noreason to hide any whois information about a site, especially if you are using the site for any kind of a business. Tends to make wary buyers think you have something to hide.

Additionally, many prospective buyers will contact you through your whois info.

I would only enable a WhoisGuard if i were afraid of Junk Mail through the letter box or hoax phone calls.

Of course, thats not a problem for all you corporate guys, but when you're doing this part time outside of School/Education - It can become a problem. I actually have a friend who thinks its fun to go through Whois' ringing up phone numbers for the fun of it.

And yes, ive told him its not a good idea.

Namecheap provides WhoisGuard.
There are spammers who harvest information from whois information. Not sure if they are able to pass the email addresses which are mostly in image form.

Your best bet is to join DNOA. It costs you $6.95 for a year and you get domain privacy on all of your accounts. Click on the little icon on the lower left corner of my signature or visit dnoa.org. PM if you have questions or if you want to sign up. I would appreciate if you could use my email address for the person who referred you.

Most registrars provide a whois protection service for free or a small fee. There as a few ccTLD registrars which does not allow whois cloaking such as the .us registry.

Whois protection only hides your personal information (name, address, email, phone no), but it can't hide registrar information or nameservers.

Why would you want to hide your registrar/nameservers info btw?

Im not one to want to hide Registrar/Nameservers info.

I guess the reasons would be to not show your hosting company (If you dont have your own nameservers) so you dont lose professionality or something along those lines.

Because of the way the Internet is build is it not possible to hide such information. Anyone could simply make a traceroute or lookup the IP address to see where a site is hosted. I can understand that people want to hide their personal information. Have got tons of spam mail on my whois e-mail addresses and have also got a decent amount of junk in my regular postbox...

I've only had 1 letter in regular mail from my whois info and the only emails I've gotten were people wanting to know if a domain was for sale. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Trying to “hide” who you are is pretty much a lost cause. Using a throwaway email address for your whois contact information is a good idea to protect against spam, but it is very difficult to hide who you are. Anyone who really wants to know will probably find a way. I know I always do.

You can use name servers from your ISP, registrar, parking service, etc. These can't be traced to you. But there's no way to hide the registrar information short of registering in a TLD that doesn't have a working whois service.
