![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Why do .name domains suck so bad? I mean there's a lot of good names left for the .name extension, is there a reason people don't buy them? Are they basically worthless?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I think it comes down to several factors. The extension itself limits a lot of potential IMHO simply because it is .name. It just never really caught on and I'd say it's one of the least well known extensions around without going into some obscure ccTLDs. It's longer that many of its competitive extensions as well and this factor certainly doesn't help it. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | yes they have the same amount of letters but .asia is a country and .info is good because the internet is all about information, i just dont think that you can develop a site that fits the .name extension. atleast off the top of my head.. |

![]() ![]() | I'm wondering whose idea or suggestion it was to establish the name extension.

![]() ![]() | .name is a general domain extension intended for use by individuals. Mostly they are registered by people for their personal sites and not used for commercial purposes. so maybe thats the reason for non popularity of .name domains.

However, it all goes back to what I said, it has several factors working against it, the length being one of the last factors I mentioned. Read it in context please. | ||||

![]() | The usual names people tend to buy are the .com, .net, .org and on rare occasions .info... and if the site only applies to a certain country, then perhaps country extensions are popular. However, every other extension sucks big time! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | To me, .name flopped because it insults people's intelligence by stating the obvious. Everyone knows a domain is a name. It's like buying a new car and telling everyone, "Hey, look at my new Ford...it's a car!" Duh! As it adds no information of value to the address, there is almost nothing it is suitable for including the personal names it was supposedly meant to represent. I wouldn't use Jackson.name if it were free. To me it tells people, "in case you didn't know, Jackson is a name". It doesn't take a Rhodes Scholar to figure that out! In my opinion it's the silliest extension in existence. Aside from Domain.Name, the extension strikes me as a waste of space.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I tried to auction off politics.name here at np, got a couple of np$ for it only, and the buyer never did follow up with godaddy to finalize the push..... I thought that one, at least, was a good idea: a directory of politicians, with contact info.... guess not!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I agree with Duke. Aside from the rare novelty domain, it's completely pointless. As a matter of fact, I dont even know what the extension was supposed to be for. People's names? What's the point... |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | That's exactly the point of the .name extension.. it designated a person's name.. I don't understand the confusion, lol! What better email address than your own name? Certainly easy to remember and relate to someone. What I found baffling was domainers who regged .names that had nothing to do with any "naming" convention.. no wonder they couldn't be sold! I could see regging a domain like fake.name, falseidentity.name, birth.name, or your personal name.. but not mesothelioma.name or mortgage.name.. ????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=149069
