Domain registered for 5 months?

I was looking to buy a domain as it was in the redemption period in October, ( as it expired around 29th October) then it was pending delete in decemer, then on the 7th or 8th of December it said on thw whois report that it hasn't been deleted but said it was registered as normal, then I checked today and it says it is registered until 12th of May 2006.

Date Registered: 2005-12-5
Date Modified: 2005-12-7
Expiry Date: 2006-12-5

Registrar: AVAILABLEDOMAINS.CA

Is that allowed to buy a domain for 5 months only? ( I had been waiting for this domain for a few months)

Actually I am not totally sure about how this works now. But there are several registrars that now allow you to ' sync ' your domains so that the renewalcomes up at the same time.
I don't know if they register it for the full year but allow you to just register it for several months ... Then they own it if you do not renew. Or if they have some special arangement just to register domains for a few months.

Either of these could explain about the part year registration.

I think you are right, before I was pretty sure it was may,, looking at it again it seems that it has been re-registered on the 5 december,
(bugger they beat me to it) probably through a backorder system

As a side note, as pointed out by NameSage, I have seen a 'feature' to 'sync' all your domains at GoDaddy as well. I am not sure is it still working there (I am trying to transfer my domains out of GoDaddy and not use it anymore), but it was present there 1-2 years or so ago.
