I think this is what you're looking for - A link is an outgoing link to an external site and a backlink is an incoming link from another site.

Yeah, and backlinks are becoming important in the ranking of search engines. Which means it's important that people link to your site basically.

Google is basically ranked all on backlinks... thought that might help

backlink are crucial if you want to get good google rankings in google search engine and of course it affects the popularity of your site.
