Things to think about before buying a name

I'd like to write an article for my blog about "things to think about before buying a domain name." Maybe the Top Ten if I can come up with that many.

For example, here is a very simple thing: Spell check the word components of the domain name before ordering it, and then copy and paste the checked name into the domain name field when ordering. Sounds dumb, but on two occasions I was in a hurry and just keyed the name into the field and ordered it, mistakenly making a spelling error! Same thing applies if you are buying a domain form an auction--make copy it and paste it into a spell checker. Sometimes it easy to miss a misspelling, or a "1" looks like an "l" or a "vv" looks like a "w".

Another would be to check the trademark database.

What else? What other things do people think about, or check for, before buying a name?

it depend what for person buying domain.
if to develope for himself - one story.
to resell - another story.
anyway it would be good to check Overture results before buying domain.

look around for the best deal for registeration,

saveing money is good

make sure the registrar offers "PUSHES". 1and1 claimed free change of ownership, but their system is hardly a push type. It involves faxes and complications that many have experienced. If you are going to resell the name you are thinking of registering, this is def. something to think about.

You mentioned spell check... a very good idea. Now I understand that english is not everyones first language, but just looking through this thread, the spelling errors are everywhere. And I am as guilty as any, and like you I have reg'd mis-spelt names, on accident, not looking for typos. Just spelled or typed them in wrong, and when I saw the dot com was available I didn't stop to think... hey.. this cant be right and check.
I couldnt get through the process fast enough... and when I really looked and saw the (a) instead of (e) or (mm) when there should only be one, well.. what can I say, boy was my face red. So, yes... pay attention to spelling, it can save some embarassment.

I think it all depends on what you are buying it for.

To re-sell
Park
Develop

Different things would be looked at depending

reselling domain will be better then developing and parking...thats what i thought...

The type of site that could be appropriately developed with the domain name, and consequently, it's popularity and potential income/traffic. I'd say that was most important.

I like to develope the site before i buy the domain, just incase something goes wrong and i decide to abandon the project
