What's the difference between A-Record and nameservers?

Sorry if that may sound stupid to more experienced NP fellow members but what is really the difference between A-Record and normal nameserver settings?

And something more: What is also the difference between CNAME (CanonicalNAME) records and subdomain?

Thank you

A name server is a host delegated as the place one can go to look up entries in a zone (domain). These servers run a Domain Name Services service (DNS). A zone is defined by a zonefile that contains various records. One of the most common of these is the A record that maps a host name (ie www) to an address. A CNAME maps a host name to another host name. An A record in the mydomain.com zone might define www as 123.111.222.33 meaning that www.mydomain.com would resolve to 123.111.222.333. A CNAME in the mydomain.com zone might define www as www.myhost.com. In this case www.mydomain.com would resolve to www.myhost.com. which would resolve to 234.44.55.66.
