Question enom question - does the redirect use 301 redirects?

Anybody know if the URL redirect service that comes free with an enom domain use a 301 redirect or a 302 redirect?

How can you tell it's a 302?

Is there anyway to make it a 301 redirect (preferred by search engines)?

EXCELLENT question, IMHO!
I've come across this recently, as well ... and 301's would be the choice so as to avoid duplication - and thus potentially lower rankings for multiple forwards/redirects - in the SE's, as I understand it.

Thanks for posting.

From the search engines point of view Jeff is right. If you are going to use a redirect you might as well use a 301 redirect.

Even Google is suggesting this on their web master guidelines.

Good luck!

Yes, that's why I asked the question
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=93266

But what I want to know is if enom uses a 301 redirect or how to make enom use a 301 redirect (maybe through advanced dns editing).

I have names that I register that are variations of my main content site (like hypen/without hyphen, name with and without an S) that I point to my main site.

I don't want to screw up my search engine position with my redirects, so I want to make sure they are all 301 redirects if possible.

Anybody have a definitive answer on how to do this, or should I email the folks at enom to see if I can get it from the horses mouth?

Well.. I've a name in enom, with dns at enom, and a Redirect subdomain configured. If I try to wget this subdomain, it's a 302.

I don't know how to do a 301 with enom but why don't host your names, you could do anything you want like that..

David.

Thanks for the clarification. I think I'll check with eNom to see if this can be changed to a 301 somehow.

That is a possibility, however it is much easier to register a name and have the registrar handle the domain pointing through their interface rather than create a new hosting account on my server for each domain name I want to redirect.

If that's what I have to do, I may end up doing that, however, ideally, I'd like to be able to do it through eNom (would save a LOT of time).

I use 301's frequently on domains I point to active sites, and it's definitely the way to go with SE's. I don't use registrar forwarding though so I can't really answer your question. It's normally done as a setup in the .htaccess file which requires you to be able to edit the file. If you choose masked or cloaked type "forwarding" it really doesn't forward at all, but loads the destination page in a hidden frame.

I would think you'd need a hosting account to do 301's. However, I could be wrong.

just to double confirm: eNom support verified said that they use 301 redirects and that there is no way to change it.

Which seems odd since as dgaussin says, the headers seem to reflect a 302 redirect.

netcheap is an unknown quantity at this point

Enom uses 302 (check headers). User your own DNS, you never know what registrars will do.
