Surname.biz - New surname TLDs???

I've seen a German press release this morning highlighting a new candidate for additionals TLDs at www.surname.biz

It look a bit like new economy reloaded. They offer surname TLDs for a pre-registration fee of $35. The idea is not bad and I’m personally believe that an open root system will be reality one day, but the guys might be a second too early?

What is the general opinion?

At first I thought this really was .surname , and my comment was going to be that it was way too long and non-intuitive.

However, now my comment is that these extensions are almost as bad (if not worse) than the new.net extensions that RegisterFly recently discontinued.

These extensions will require some sort of plugin or other device to access, and of course are not Icann kosher as far as I know.

Looks to be a bad idea for the time being,
Allan

Right. No one has been able to make a successful end run around ICANN, to date, and, (IMHO), until plugins come prepackaged w/ OS's, ala Macromedia FlashPlayer/Adobe Reader, they are going to be a hard sell. Prepackaging is doubtful, because Microsoft, (one of sponsors behind recently successful .mobi ICANN application), aren't about to step on ICANN's toes and the current www structure.

Instant TLD - Ready to run?

... looks like they will apply for an ICANN registration. I think the times will change following the Signpost in Cyberspace report and latest ICANN strategy papers. Remember 10 years ago when only 24 TLDs where available. I strongly believe that in 2015 there will be an nearly unlimited number of TLDs available if you have enough money to set-up your own TLD server.

OK, the guys from surname.biz are quite too early, but I personally believe that .surnames and .cities TLDs might be the best option to use new TLDs. Many other approaches like .travel only serve a very very limited community.

Too many extensions destroys the entire system, IMHO, as then folks wouldn't have any standardized way of finding a domain on topic/point. But certainly a possibility, as my "know it all attitude" doesn't make anything a reality, unfortunately

Don't accept wooden nickels or fake TLD's.
