How much does domain name cost to registrar? or profit on domain name registration

Some registrar charge as low as $5.99 (1and1) to $35 (netsol).
I don't think 1and1 makes a lost on domain registratrion. They don't make as much profit as netsol but still they might be making $2 to 3. I am also aware that most of the registrar make more money by marketing addson like webhosting etc etc (ex: annoying godaddy ads on whenever you buy a domain name at their website).
I believe icann charges $1.xx or something to registrar for each domain name (from godaddy website).
So in short everything after $1.xx is profit for registrar????
Ofcourse the registrar have administration cost etc.
Any REGISTRAR company/user etc can give me insight on the domain registrar business works.

For any .com/.net, the registration cost is $5 to network solutions - the administrator of .com/.net and $0.25 to ICANN who is in charge of overall internet organization. So if a registrar - say yahoo - decides to offer domain registrations for $4.98 they are losing $0.27 on every domain registered not counting their fixed costs which include fees of at least $500 per year per extension that they offer.

They pay 6.00 to verisign/neulevel etc.
.25 to icann

about 35 cents per transaction to CC fee
Plus 2 to 2.5 transaction fee

plus annual icann fees
office space
employees
insurance

if they are selling under 7.00 they are making little to no money
