A company has tried to transfer one of my domains...

Today I received an e-mail:

Quote:
A request has been received to transfer the domain XXXXXXX.com to XXXXXXXXX an authorized Reseller of the domain Registrar OpenSRS/Tucows. This request was entered at Tue Oct 7 by XXXXXX XXXXXXX....
I looked up the name of the requestor, and it is the CEO of a company. The company seems pretty large, has a management team of 5, and the individual has his name mentioned in a few random sites, including some press releases, and a business magazine article.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/8133-company-has-tried-transfer-one-my.html

What do you think the motivation of trying to transfer the domain was, and would it be wise for me to contact the individual and try to negotiate?

Thanks

Before you get mad, consider it could have been a typo on his part. It's possible they own a similar name.

Since you do have the guy's name and company info, write or call him to ask him. If you're open to selling the name, this could be a good chance to do so.

You should definitely establish contact here, IMHO.
If he is, in fact, interested in YOUR domain name, and no mistakes were made (for instance an incorrect spelling or extension, what have you) ... you'll need to clearly tell him that he has made a very unwise judgement call in attempting to transfer the domain, and then "negotiate" if he is truly interested in the domain name. Make it worth your while.
Best of Luck here.

Thanks for your input everyone. I figured it could be an honest mistake - but even if it was an underhanded attempt to grab my domain, I guess I'm not too upset since I didn't fall for it. I will try to contact him and see what is up

Bingo!
Makes one wonder, though ... how many of these types of things (intentional or even by honest mistake(s)) occur over the course of a month, months, a year, years. I would assume at least a small portion end up getting transferred in the end. Thoughts?

Good Luck with everything here, DomainSpring.

sounds like they owned a lot of domain names that they were transferring over a few per month (maybe from some list) and didn't realize that some of the domains had expired and dropped.

No harm no foul

This has been happening to me too over the last month.. one guy has been trying to transfer a name godaddy recently got me.

He has attempted it five times now.

I did some research & it turns out it is the previous owner who keeps requesting it..

How can I find out more info on who they are? The company is Commerceville, LLC I also have his name but won't disclose that.

Cyphix,
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=8133

Try searching for your domain (the company's old site) through Google. If it finds a match, try the "Cached" link to see if any contact info is listed. There are probably easier ways, but that's how I like to do it.

Just put a REGISTRAR-LOCK on all your domains and forget about it.

We had a recent instance where somebody kept trying to grab our domain CINEMA.NET. (Yes, I know it's a good name.)

The request kept arriving (6 times in 6 days!). It provided only one link Click on the following link to confirm the domain transfer request for these domains.

There was no link to deny the transfer!!

And they do not identify the requesting party in the message. It is an absolutely unprofessional and unacceptably insufficient message accompanying a domain transfer. For example: what if you were expecting to transfer a name (a customer said they were going to do it sometime soon) and an unauthorized transfer request just happened to occur before your customer got around to doing their legitimate request?! You think "Oh there's that transfer request, it doesn't say who it's going to, but I guess that's the one we're expecting so go ahead and ACK IT". Boom, there goes your domain to some unauthorized party.

The requests were coming from RegisterAPI.com (dotster d/b/a), and there was no way to respond to them!. We demanded an explanation and got an autoreply. The "CustomerCare" autoreply lists many FAQs, and then says "If after searching our Knowledge Base you still cannot find your answer, please log into your account and click on the "Ask A Question" tab to submit a question to our Customer Care team."

We are not their farking customer! How can we log in to an account which we do not possess in order to ask them a question that they should be required to answer?!

There should be a law!

Dotster d/b/a RegisterAPI.com is ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGEOUSLY UNPROFESSIONAL in this email conduct of domain transfers!!

No identification of the party requesting the transfer.
No link to deny the transfer
No way to contact them
Unfarkingbelievable!

/flame off/

Anyway, back to my original point ... just LOCK your domains and forget about it. It's not worth wasting the time.

Another instance occurred a few years ago when somebody did actually grab INDEX.NET from us. Needless to say, I was upset. I started waking people up at midnight. The transferring registrar was some small outfit in Illinois, and they woke up senior staff to get to the bottom of it. It turned out that it really was a typo. A staffer had misread IINDEX.NET and just entered INDEX.NET instead. The IINDEX.NET domain did actually exist, and they faxed paperwork over which was satisfactory in documenting the nature of the error. They were profusely apologetic and transferred it back the next day.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=8133

So you never know, such transfers could be from malicious domain hijackers, amateurish morons, or just unintended typos from nice people. But if your domains are protected from transfers (even by you clicking on ACK links in emails), then you have nothing to worry about ...

and you can sleep well at night just like I'm about to do ...

That's good advice. Accidentally mis-typing a name--especially if it is long--is quite feasible. I would not be alarmed unless the same request to transfer kept resurfacing. Even then, register-lock is a good failsafe.

I get these unauthorized transfer requests about once a month., I did have someone (that owned alot of domains) keep on trying to transfer a certain name I have., First he tried to stargate, then dotster, then tried using some foreign non english websites., I have had two domains over time transfered without any email approval luckily they were junk names.
