I've been in the .com mining mode off and on for a couple of days , and as far as the the value:time ratio is concerned, I think you are better off working a $3-$4/hr gig somewhere and buying from other people as you've said. There are a few out there, however, you have to dig-dig-dig, to find them, and most of what you find, at best, are names w/ branding *potential*.

Right. Spy69, do you want to resize your sig, or are you going to make me havta do it?

The daily drops often provide some good domain names in the .com market as well. Found a couple really good ones yesterday...

There are some good ones that slipp through the cracks, but for the most part, you will be competing w/ others for the better names, and will need some deep pockets. But the "decent" ones that do drop down, are more cost effective than mining for new avails.

I've been mostly scouring lately for brandable names for my own use rather than for resale, so that's probably why I find a bit more in the daily drop. If speculation is the purpose than daily drops are an expensive way to go, far too expensive for me...

Short, brandable dotcom names are there for the taking. You just need to be creative and have a good way of creating and checking *a lot* of permutations.

All names are brandable! Google, Yahoo, eBay . . .

There are still some decent sounding, short names available. I think you either have to go for the name that corresponds exactly what your business is, ex. cars, or go for a word that doesn't mean much till you build, brand and promote it.

Many of the best names are taken, but good ones can still be found. I've seen some decent names registered recently and I've had some half decent ones myself. You just have to be ready to think for good names. Also, you'll get the occasional decent expired name as well.

In order for you to get good .COMs you have to have a keen eye or ears on the current events that is happening in this world. Just like last December, some guy just registered AsiaTsunami.com after the tragedy happened in South East Asia. When the rumor that Google will provide 1 gigabyte email, a Certified Handsome domainer quickly registered 1gigmail.com.

I now tend to go for less strong extenions but find really strong generic words which makes up for the extension. The only way that I have ever made cash from selling .coms was when I bought them off of other people and then resold them.
