What is the Best Backorder/Drop Catch Service out there? Who do you recommend or not recommend using?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
From my understanding, it is always best to use the backordering service from the current registrar of the domain you want. So for example if example.com will be dropping soon and it is registered at godaddy, then its a good idea to use godaddy's backordering service. If example.com is registered at moniker, then you would probably want to use snapnames to backorder with. The backordering service of where the domain is actually registered usually has the best shot of getting the name before the backordering service of another registrar.

From my understanding, if the name is in pending delete, then it doesn't make any difference where the the name was registered before. even if the name was registered with godaddy for instance and is now in pending delete, godaddy's chances are not higher than others to dropcatch it the day it drops (6 days after going to pending delete)... in that case only the technical capability/algorithm etc, decides and from what i have experienced, you should use Snapnames, Namejet, Pool all 3 ofem if you really want a name. Godaddy backorder sucks and they have a very low success rate

One of the domains I am interested in is registered through a small registrar. They don't have a Backorder/Drop Catch service. In this case should I just wait until I can hand reg it?

Depends how bad you want it.

There's always the possibility someone else will see it on a drop list and think it's worth grabbing too.

With that said, if you go the backorder route, wait until the last day to do it, to prevent giving too much heads-up that there's interest in it.

Part of the reason I am interested in the domain is that it is aged and would be great for development. To preserve the "age" do I need backorder it?

Here's my tuppence worth: I am new to backordering, and used DomainMonster, and got charged £50 for registering the domain. I don't know what the norm is, but that seemed mighty expensive. They have a great tool for finding pending drops though that I'd recommend to anyone. Quite addictive actually :)
http://www.domainmonster.com/expired-domains/ - here's the tool.

If you want to preserve the age, you have to try and get it before it actually drops. See if the registrar has a partnership with one of the dropcatchers like Snapnames, Namejet, etc where they'll list expiring domains before letting it drop for real.

Once it deletes, the new date will become the day it gets registered.

You can't keep the age (creation date) once the domain is dropped and dropcatched by drop catching services or is hand regged again.

Regarding "waiting until handregging": if you really want the name and are ready to pay minimum 60 dollars, try snapnames, namejet, pool.

If you don't want to spend that much but feel more like "its ok to get it, but not that important", try the cheap godaddy backorder, with coupon codes, you can get those for about 15 dollars i guess. They are not successful when other dropcatchers are involved, but they are faster than hand regs most of the time.

When you are looking at backordering services you are best off relying to the main three.

Pool - Snapnames - Namejet

IMHO Snapnames > Namejet > Pool

One of the biggest things you want to focus on too is if the domain is pendingDelete in status (http://Who.is/) you will want to find a registrar closest to the registry and the amount of registrars underneath them attempting to catch.

I personally run my own scripts on multiple servers to try and obtain best results and can beat out some big names, but never the biggest names. I run about 3-5 checks per second per server through different API's.

I have heard many good things about snapnames
Godaddy backordering is only good if
a) it is at Godaddy and still in redemption (i.e. not dropping yet) OR
b) it is dropping (pending delete), but there are no backorders in other systems (but than you might be successful in hand regging it after the drop as well without having to pay extra for backorder)

GD need to improve the BO. at least for their own domains.
I lost BO domain name registered though GD before. I BO using GD :(
the success rate for popular/ good domain is Low. and we need to pay in front.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Unfortunately the domain I wanted looks like it was renewed by the owner. Oh well!

I found another domain that I am interested that is in Redemption Period at NameScout (Whois says Domainlink?). It expires on 7-17 so it should be opening up to register soon.

I was going to use Snapanames to get it, but I believe Pool owns NameScout so I guess they would be best to use.

Correct.

I found another domain that I am interested that is in Pending Delete at NameScout (Whois says Domainlink?). It expire on 7-17 so it should be opening up to register soon.

I was going to sue Snapanames to get it, but I believe Pool owns NameScout so I guess they would be best to use.
No. See above. It could be caught by Snapnames or another dropcatcher (assuming you are not the only one going after the domain).

The domain is actually still in the Redemption Period.
