So the rate of increase is reducing. It took 2 years to add the 3rd 25M and 4 years to add the 4th 25M

I would say its due to the lack of available good domains and or new tld"s introduced over the years

If they don't taste good the first time they don't usually taste any better later.

Not sure about the Domaintools article, maybe they wanted a bit of publicity in advance of the VeriSign Q4 Earnings Report, they were certainly stretching the numbers a bit to get over the headline figure.

VeriSign were more conservative

Quote:
In our Naming business, the base of registered names in .com and .net totaled approximately 113.8 million at the end of December.

The growth is in ccTLDs.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=744608

But .com is still growing faster than many other TLDs.

I think that lower increasing rate was caused for the most part by the 2007-08 economic crisis

take a look at the historic data at zooknic.com/Domains/counts.html (I have made an attachment with a graph from that data)

after the dotcom bubble and bust (the bump in the graph around 2000-2001) registrations started to increase again

... then around 2005 (probably because yahoo domain registration and other factors made domaining more mainstream) registrations started increasing at a continuously increasing rate (the line becomes steeper and steeper)

... then around 2008 there is a huge decline (a big gap) and the line becomes flatter (which represents a lower increasing rate)

from 2005 to 2008 .coms increased at about 1,000,000/month (for most months) , while from 2008 to 2012 increased "only" by about 500,000/month

because of the economic crisis people globally (and macroeconomically) had/have less disposable income which lowered the amount of domains they were/are registering

????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=744608

of course , (as it was mentioned) many other factors also played a big role in people buying less .coms

for example , the scarcity of good available domains ... the english dictionary has about 100,000 words , think how many combinations and made-up words have already been registered so as to get to 75,000,000 or 100,000,000

the growth of ccTLDs , both in terms of wider usage of them in their respective countries and availability of good domains (taken in .com)

the introduction of new TLDs that attracted a lot of the available funds especially of new domainers (that alternatively might have bought .coms)

the Domain Name Industry Brief (Dec 2011) has some statistics
verisigninc.com/en_US/why-verisign/research-trends/domain-name-industry-brief/index.xhtml

besides the report ... (if you scroll down) there is also a domain quiz (9 questions)

[spoiler] - but interesting info if someone is bored to do the test

8Q. In the DNS protocol , a query for a domain that is not in the zone returns an NXD response . On average , for how many unique domain names per day do Verisign's .COM servers return an NXD response ?

8A. Over 68 million unique domain names per day receive DNS queries but are not in the zone (almost 2B of the 50B total daily queries)

that means 68 million unregistered domains get 2 billion hits per day (wow , some of those domains would be traffic goldmines , I wonder if VeriSign would sell that list lol)

9Q. Since 1985 , Verisign's registry for .COM and .NET has processed over 1.5 billion new domain name registrations . How many of those registrations are unique names ?

9A. 475 Million (From Data Warehouse) which means about 375 million names were registered at some point but are now available ! At the peak of domain registration , we reached 5 million new registrations on some days .

I don't think there is any foul play , but I did notice something that kind of "supports" your "pump-up" theory ...

for the last couple of years registrations usually increased 30k-45k per day (new minus deleted) ... on the day it went over the 100M mark the increase (new minus deleted) was ~450k
