No Nameserver

I thought that a domain name required the assignment of a primary name server and at least one secondary name server..

I was looking at a name which shows in some sources as unregistered. Hosterstats has it deleted about 6 years ago.

I went to register a few weeks ago it and it's taken (and is for another 6 months at least).
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/744503-no-nameserver.html

Why is it possible to have a domain with no DNS entries? Do only some registrars allow this? Should it be reported? Why do tools use the DNS entry for information if it can be flawed like this? It's like a "ghost" domain.

So many questions!

Doesn't this, according to the anti-SOPA people, BREAK THE INTERNET?

Genuinely interested in information.

There is nothing wrong with that 'configuration'. If you don't want a domain to resolve at all (like a TM or a dubious reg that you regret later), it's one way to neuter it.

The domains with no name servers do not appear in the zone file, and some providers seem to look in the zone file (offline) rather than doing a direct check with the registry. That's why the name may show up as available at certain places.

Some extensions do not allow that and will insist on name servers, for example .de is strict about it.
