.com premium domain listed for $17,500 (.net, .org, and .biz still available)

I was looking for an available domain name for a future website. The domain I wanted to purchase is listed as a premium domain. However the .net, .org, and .biz extensions are still available.

Should I grab what is available? Could I run into any issues if say someone actually buys the .com?

The .com is not an active website.

What kind of website? Business? Hobby?

If business, I would contact the owner and get him to start talking.

Hard to tell w/ the info you provided. It's possible that you would be the only person on this forum willing to spend $5 on the name.

However, if you would consider offering $xxx to the owner of the com then I'd buy the others including the ""TV.com if it makes sense.

I'm looking to build web directory catered to server side scripting.

Its not a business (more of a hobby) although I expect some revenue from PPC ads (who wouldn't). The purchase is not tax deductible and I cannot afford 17k for a domain name.

I don't understand why the owner of the .com wouldn't purchase the remaining popular extensions...

The name is generic and I don't believe its trademarked. I'm really tempted to grab the remaining extensions and say to hell w/ the .com.

I would much rather you say to hell with the .com especially if we are talking about a hobby here.

When you stated that it is a premium domain name I assume you are referring to GoDaddy.com. Sometimes when you search for a name it gives back a result as a premium domain name for sale. The problem is these prices are made up from people that own the names not Godaddy often with very little metric on their true value. Often these prices are absurd and are of people selling junk hoping some idiot would come along to snatch it up. It's similar for the GoDaddy auctions.

My advice, don't be that idiot. That domain could sit there and never get bought and be deleted. If there is no existing site based on your name, buy another extension and develop that thing. Much more affordable for a hobby I think.

I don't know why anyone would pay 17 grand for a hobby website domain.

My suggestion is to wait for a Godaddy $1.00 coupon and reg the .NET version.

$20 for a hobby based page is not too bad.

Given it's for a hobby, just get the .net. If you were taking it as a serious business, I'd suggest to look for another .com.
