2011.. What would you change? if you could...

The Year 2011 is almost at a end, The new year close at hand.

This will be my first full year Domaining , Have made a pile of mistakes. But some sound investments also.

I guess my question to everyone is:
1- What did you let slip through your fingers?,
2- What did you invest in that you should have avoided?
3- What would you have done differently in 2011?.
4- what do you personally think would be the best investment in 2012.

Thanks

Not sure if this is the right Thread mods. If not Would you move it

1. FoodForThought [dawt] com. But it was too expensive for my budget, so it's not really a regret, just a mournful longing.

2. I was pretty good about avoiding bad investments on a grand scale. I made some minor purchases that I later scratched my head about, for example, boardn [dawt] com.

3. For 2012, I'm going to be more selective about what I buy, keep hand regs to a minimum: look for bargain names with age and brandability (I recently won a 15-year-old name, but it's not in my account yet. My oldest name now is almost 14 years old, Poets.net). Allow my obvious junk to expire.

4. At this point, I don't see many good domain investments, other than the aftermarket domains, such as good one-syllable, prounounceable LLLL.com domains. Aside from personal preference, I believe that the new adult TLD will bomb simply because of the litigation issues that are bound to arise. HOWEVER, even if it's successful, I will still feel good about not investing in it.

5. Work more on selling (as opposed to buying).

NippleBleaching.com - slipped through my fingers. Don't laugh. Had it on my 'to get' list for a few months, was circling around and around the purchase... it's a fad not caught on in the western world yet but it is huge in the Orient. So the day I decided to finally grab it, someone had regged it like 2 days earlier. I miss that name

No real regrets in the way of dn investments this year, thankfully. A handful of hand regs that, after a few months, I realize aren't going anywhere, but that's a small itch and not a bona fide regret.

Used my brain more. Aside from that, can't think of anything.

If you have sizeable investment money (I assume you're speaking of domains here) be very wise and forward-thinking with bidding on aftermarket domains at the dropcatchers; if you get only hand-regged names, the only way to go is to really really really think smart about grabbing domains that mean almost nothing right now but which look like they may become strong future trends.

For example I just found out about 'mirrorless cameras' yesterday, they are just gathering steam... but I missed all the best dot.coms by about a year. I look hard at nascent trends that are just an itch in someone's trousers right now but look like they have a good chance. Another example, I picked up RockingSkateboard.com recently. They look whack and this is an item that might fizzle out... or skyrocket in a year or two. I really keep up on trendsetting sites and new gadget sites.
