I'm not surprised.

Every night (during the Nightly News), there are male enhancement ads, the company that features those two silly side-by-side tubs.

Beyond tacky.

Seems odd to target porn webmasters through TV commercials. I'll bet their ad campaigns are to get regular businesses to do defensive registrations.

I just saw the ad tonight--it seems to take the extortion angle, "Get your .xxx before someone else does."

Premise: Some sleazy dude is trying to sell domains to a gang. I think it's supposed to be humorous, but it comes across as just strange.

Annoying or not, it is what is.

I know that some of you are "pumping" this TLD on your blogs, so it's understandable that you might want to protect your investment.

But no matter how you look at it, .xxx is a hot potato, and those ads don't help its cause.

For something to be humorous, it actually has to be funny and unplausible; unfortunately, the "gang" ad hits too close to the reality of how this TLD is being marketed.

The domain industry is alive and needs open minds. Nothing wrong with adult content and if the tv ads are approved for broadcast then the vote is cast. Not sure if there will be .XXX ads during the Super Bowl but then again I find the Super Bowl ads to be overly "clever" and overpriced. The .XXX ads on the other hand promote adult situations with a humorous twist.

I did misunderstand, so my apologies to you, my poetic friend.

Perhaps I'm being a bit overly sensitive about the societal implications of this TLD.

I guess I'm "old school" about pornographic sex (and, yes, that is my problem), but, most importantly, I know that there will be egregious abuses and situations that will occur that some proponents may not have thought about, for example, parking pages that link to ch*ld p*rn sites. It CAN happen because filters will only work to a point. A CP site does not necessarily announce its real intention in its domain name.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=740600

In any case, I know that my opinion is not going to sway someone who is totally into this TLD, but, perhaps, those of us who find .xxx distasteful can at least offer our opinions and reservations to those who are sitting on the fence and maybe change a few minds.

I'm NOT advocating eliminating .xxx altogether--that ship has sailed. Besides, freedom of speech trumps any moral and political concerns; however, I do believe that it should be regulated and scrutinized, just like a muncipality does when it rules that an adult bookstore cannot be located near schools and playgrounds.

How this would play out on the web, I don't know, perhaps something like requiring libraries to set aside dedicated child friendly (blocked .xxx) computer stations.

To be honest, I'm not against porn, unless it involves subjects that are forced and/or unable to express their will. But if it is made and watched by consentient adults, I consider it just another form of entertainment. The point is .XXX is hated by the very industry it claims to represent, because porn operators are aware that their industry could become a ghetto if the general public associated them with .XXX and goverments worldwide could block the TLD in the blink of an eye. On the contrary, they would want to make their industry as mainstream as ever.

My main concern with p0rn (and, consequently .xxx) has to do with child exploitation and the enslavement of women from poor countries who are brought to the US (or other super power countries) and forced into prostitution. A slavery ring was recently shut down in my city; young women from developing countries in Asia were "fronted" by a nail salon.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=740600

I think .xxx opens up the probability of an increase in these kinds of abuses; the quest for web content will drive the underworld to entice even more vulnerable people into its net through deceptive practices (for example, promises of factory jobs in the US).

I don't think you can expect the xxx registry to police itself--this hasn't proven to be true in other TLDs.

Most of you may be too young, but if you Google "Traci Lords," you will see what I mean. Although she is now in her 40's, her underage p0rn films are still illegal because she was 15 when she made them. Whether or not she consented (hotly debated), she was at an age where she could not legally give consent.

What I'm saying: if you're parking .xxx domains, you need to be aware if the links on your landing page lead to a site where the adults are truly consenting and not to a s*x sl@ve or ch*ld p*rn site. You could find your domain seized and shut down by the DOJ (given that xxx is located in Florida).

And you can be sure that governmental scrutiny will be a lot tougher on .xxx than on .com, etc., and governments are likely to view offending parked pages with equal disdain as original content sites.

Even if I were gungho on xxx adult sites, I would still avoid this TLD. Like.The.Plague.

Domainers have enough rough waters to navigate.

Also, I think the TV ads will eventually subside, once the sellers of ad space realize the riskiness of this TLD. Those who offer up our TV entertainment are notoriously conservative when it comes to unwanted negative publicity.

@Ms

Exactly. Pornographic films are just another form of entertainment if they're made and bought by people who are legally authorized to do that. Pornography involving children, unwilling or mentally challenged adults or animals is a crime and is no different to a murder.

Well, considering the quality of the ads, and the timeslots the have them in, it looks like we'll be seeing them for awhile.

Hi Acro,
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=740600
I agree the domain industry is alive, and that advertising any extention can only help it grow... but.... my concern is the quality and the premise of the dot xxx ads.

I wish other exts would have spent the money to promote... (like dot us for example).

Oh well, we'll see how it all pans out.

Peace,
Cyberian
