Awful .com and .net price increase... again!

I was surprised that we weren't getting a price increase this year... well we will 6 months from now:
One of the "reasons"? Internet growth and DDoS attacks. Well, if the deal isn't good they are free to allow another company to take the responsability.

Verisign announced that as of Jan. 15, 2012, the registry fee for .com domain names will increase from $7.34 to $7.85 and that the registry fee for .net domain names will increase from $4.65 to $5.11.

technology should drive price lower, not higher. I guess Verisign does not follow Moore's law.

Exactly. Cheaper and more powerful processing power balance the increase in traffic. And they are already making a giant profit so it's a weak excuse.

With the .net contract extended we will have a pretty price hike of 10% every year. Do you think the .com contract won't be renewed as well? How many technological "commodities" are increasing prices at those rates?

I would guess it is simply factoring in expected inflation. The dollar is on its way down, and Verislime wants to maintain its income.

its very simple. if you have a monopoly, you can make price increases, even though logically the price should go down each year for such digital products as domain names.

3 - STRATEGY gradation.

I am in no way in favor of the hike but it's kinda odd how ppl forgot what .com prices were in, say, the 90s. Times change, I know. But they haven't ALWAYS been around $10 a pop.

I bought domains at those old prices. If we aren't paying those today isn't thanks to Verisign but to many registrars that appeared and reduced their margins.
Network Solutions still charges 3x more than other registrars.

I'm sure everyone here who works in a technology job has offered pay cuts to account for technology efficiencies, correct?

You can argue against the increase but at least pick an argument better than theirs is for doing it!

The truth is that they are raising their prices because they can thanks to this settlement:
http://www.icann.org/en/tlds/agreeme...agreements.htm
Not because of any DDoS attacks or more equipment needed because of any internet growth.

Any market where there is no competitive bidding ends like this.
Perpetual presumptive renewal clauses = not good for customers.

When we had to register domains through Network Solutions they were expensive.
When other registrars appeared they became much more affordable.
