it shows how little i make ... that i even notice but sometimes when i see that a domain has had clicks and i look at the stats , it shows recent spider activity

it may seem trivial but it would help if anyone can confirm or refute this as i am monitoring stats re my optimization attempts and trying to see a cause and effect relationship between my efforts and future clicks

i know its not exactly science but i would love to be able to know if i am doing the right things to build traffic - and not be misled bz clicks that are incidental

I say - yes.
Depending on a particular PPC logic and filtering techniques, when a spider/crowler/miner follows a link, it often registers as a valid click.

Examples:

- Plain HTML PPC text link is definitely vulnerable for the scenario above.
- AdSense links are protected since they're being generated by JavaScript, which is a no-go for spiders.

This kinda stinks for those of us who have paid for PPC traffic!! I hadn't considered this, though I expect I have paid for useless clicks in many other ways!
