who.is is what I generally check first, I believe it is somehow associated with name.com

Whois lookup and Domain name search has been relatively OK for me as well.

When in doubt, refer to the respective registry whois, for example:
VeriSign (com, net, edu)
PIR (org)
etc.

I use domain tools whois. I have NEVER had an available domain registered after I have checked it from Domain Tools. Avoid Network Solutions; they are not to be trusted and been known to "reserve" checked domains and then charge $35.00.

I wouldn't check domains through GoDaddy (unless you intend to reg it right away). I can't say for sure if they reserve domains, but I have heard that they recommend checked domains to other customers. I have no proof of this, just what I have heard.

I agree. They are the most trustworthy sources.

I've always wondered if certain ones did this. Years ago I would reg a name days, sometimes a couple weeks, after checking it. However now I always reg right after checking names...like within minutes.

How safe is internic.net for .com and .net these days? Do they still have some management over the registry?

iwhois.com trust

I use iwhois.com

here's a statement from their website (trust link)

Here is a summary of our position on this, so that you may have complete confidence in iWhois.
We never register any domains searched at iWhois, either for ourselves or others.
Our website software never writes any searched domains to a database.
We never access or extract such data from our server logfiles. These are emptied daily.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/637635-which-whois-to-trust.html
When you search an available domain at iWhois, only the relevant registry is queried.
No data is passed to any other company during or after each domain search.
Finally, iWhois has become particularly popular among domain professionals and so it would be a gross violation of trust were we ever to act otherwise. This policy is not subject to future change.
