GoDaddy backordering question

If a domain expired on a certain date (so after that day it enters 'Redemption Period') and I backordered the domain with GoDaddy 2 or 3 days before that expiration date (when the name is in 'client Transfer Prohibited' status), would GoDaddy catch (or, at least, try to catch) it by that date? Or would they attempt to catch it about 2 months later, when the name drops?

Sorry for my 'newbie-like' question but I'm new to backordering. Thank you!

Where is the name registered? If its at godaddy, it is going to have to go thru the auction process before it becomes available as a drop. Basically if you backordered it, you would need to either buy it on auction or wait to see if no one else bids on it & then godaddy might catch it. If I were you I would watch for it to hit the godaddy auction.

Thanks for your reply. It's not at GoDaddy. When does GoDaddy (and, in general, any backordering company) try to catch names? At expiration date or about 2 months later (after 'Redemption period' and 'pending delete' statuses)?

If it is not registered with GoDaddy or one of its partners, then the safe bet is backordering it with Snapnames, Pool and NameJet. These three companies have their complex networks of drop catchers and in many cases they acquire the names depending upon the demand. Therefore, it is likely that the name you are after appears as a pre-release name on either of their websites. Just keep an eye. If the name is not acquired as a pre-release, then it drops after the redemption and pending delete periods. In such a situation, no registrar has any exclusivity.

What I don't understand is... if a domain expires in 2 days and there is at least one backorder on it at GoDaddy (but it could Snapnames or any other company), when will GD try to catch it? 2 days later (the end of the year covered by the reg fee) or after RP and PD statuses (the moment when it's again available for hand registration)?

GD will not try to catch a domain until it is in PendingDelete status and actually drops.

It is about 75 days after expiration that most TLD's actually drop. When that happens there will be several companies going after it, assuming it is a quality domain.

You have a better chance getting it on TDNAM before that stage, as that is the pre-release process of GD domains.

Thank you! Does this apply only to domains registered at GoDaddy?

Yes, GD expiring domains go through the TDNAM auction process.

Other registrars might have pre-release auction partners as well, like NameJet with NetSol.

If you really want a domain that is your best chance to get them, because once they delete it is a free for all on the drop.

Thank you very much! The whole process is much clearer now. When a backorder is put on a domain with GD, does GD list it so that it draws attention to that particular domain?

As far as I am aware the answer is no if the domain is in pending delete status.

OK. Let's get a few things straight here. Only if it's a GoDaddy name is it worth backordering at GoDaddy. The instances of them catching a non-GoDaddy registered domain is extremely slight because they cannot compete with the big backordering guns of SnapNames/NameJet/Pool. Only on the chance that one of these don't capture the domain do GoDaddy have any real chance, and even then they are competing with many other dropcatchers.

Then again. It is better to wait for the (GoDaddy registered) domain to appear in their GoDaddy Auctions (Formerly TDNAM) because if you place a backorder it will show up as the first bid on the domain. Whereas if you didn't backorder it, you could snap it up at the last moment anonymously, or even wait for it to drop into their $5 bargain bin.

For non-GoDaddy registered domains, it depends who the registrar is. Each backorder company has it's own tie-ups with affiliated registrars. Normally it is good enough to only bid at the dropcatcher affiliated with the domain's registrar. But to be safe, you can bid at SnapNames/NameJet/Pool. It won't cost you anything for the bids unless you win the domain, but you ensure you are at the table, in case, by surprise, one of the other two dropcatchers captures the domain. Which happens occassionally.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/629798-godaddy-backordering-question.html

Having said all that. Where is the domain registered? What is the expiry date? How much do you want this domain?
