Buyer got a bargain!

Quote:
The domain named Russia.com was sold for $1.5 million through domain name marketplace Sedo. It’s one of the largest prices paid in 2009 for domain name. The buyer was not disclosed.

Launched in May 1995, Russia.com’s owned by NewMedia Holdings, Inc. and operated under license by web consultancy Paley Media, Inc. since 2004. The site, which offers information about Russia travel, has more than 8,000 monthly unique visitors according to Compete.

NewMedia Holdings and Paley Media also operate the media properties on the following domain names as country channels: Algeria.com, Morocco.com, PuertoRico.com, SouthAfrica.com, Scotland.com, Ukraine.com, etc. Those web-sites, which have similar designs, are monetized with Google contextual, search and banner ads.

The .ru domain name Russia.ru is operated by NewMedia Stars. Russia.ru is leading Russian internet TV channel with a monthly reach of 2 million in Russia in September 2009, according to TNS Web Index.

I agree, it isn't at all. Maybe the domain could have fetched a bit more, nevertheless it's a fair price.

For all those who think Estibot is a source of amusement only, check the (beta version) tag: 1,540,000 USD

If anyone can link to a guesstimate remotely close to how this one was going to pan out, feel free to share

[Personally I would've said at least a million more was about right, but that's the volatility of the after market highlighted right there ^]

I sincerely thought it would sell for much more .. at around 6-7Million because some time ago Korea.com sold for $5million .

No.of internet users in Korea is not more than Russia and Russia is not just a country but a continent.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/625371-russia-com-sold-1-500-000-a.html

by the way , the Seller -NewMedia Holdings has sold the name, a name they have owned and operated since 1995. They also own some other category-killer properties including: StockMarkets.com, Musicians.com, Puerto Rico.com, Scotland.com, Birds.com and many more.

And the new buyer is rumoured to be Russia Standard ( the same company that purchased Vodka.com in 2006 for $3 million ) .

wiki : "Russia is by far the largest country in the world, covering more than a ninth of the Earth’s land area. Russia is also the ninth most populous nation with 142 million people[1]. It extends across the whole of northern Asia and 40% of Europe,"

a great deal for buyer IMO

Geo.com's are totally contingent on their ability to earn.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=625371

Unlike keyword.com's that can be used to enrich the brand of an existing business concern (thus have a much higher X factor, since their value is qualitative) geo's 'are what they are' and must be able to generate some sort of a return.

They do have the vanity factor going for them- but you can be rest-assured that whoever bought this name did so contingent on what they believed was it's capacity for generating revenue. The price they paid was probably a multiple of that. Maybe-possibly it was a very large end-user gamble (the domain equivalent of the luxury goods market) but I doubt it. I'd rather have LasVegas.com than Russia.com.

People who buy names like this do so based on math, not 'hunch'. They're interested in the nuts and bolts of how that name performs, and how it might potentially perform with the addition of certain content-types.

I don't know, 1,500,000 $US is not alot of money for some of these rich russian oligarchs, maybe he bought it to use as his personal email address - They spend more than that painting their Yacht each year

A vanity purchase wouldn't shock me. The superrich might spend $500,000 on a wristwatch. This could be a vanity purchase that actually generates return.

When was the last time anyone spent $1million on vanity purchase of a domain name? Nobody is going to spent $1million to use a name as their personal email address "rich" does not equal "stupid".

Incredible buy, imo...

If domain real estate has any meaning at all, then, this is a monster domain....Fantastic.....Some time in the future, wouldn't be surprised to see it change hands for $20 million....

Btw...NewMedia Holdings is completely unrelated to my NewMediaFrontiers®.....
