Deceptive Domains on Ebay

There are plenty of deceptive domain auctions on ebay. Here's a joker with a "poker.com" auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...739697121&rd=1

Same person also has "bet.com", "target.com", and (gutsy!) "ebay.com" knockoffs!

Link doesn't work for me. But there are many scammers. I once saw an auction for mario.com. Everywhere it said mario.com except in one spot in the description where he put www-mario.com. That might fool someone who thinks he's getting the dream domain.

It's not poker.com and bet.com. It's Pokèr.com and bèt.com. All of his name have the accent marks. So maybe he's not like a scammer?

IMO that auction is still designed to deceive a potential buyer...

"VERY RARE HIGH LEVEL Domain Name with a .com extension
This domain name is truly worth millions!"

Oh I totally agree. Like my example for mario.com. But, what can you do. Although I do not agree with their actions as theyre attempting to deceive, the correct information is still there. They did write out the correct domains. I don't think ebay could so anything about that. It would be the buyers fault if they missed out on the accent marks.

These IDN names are destinied for manipulation. When the buyer finds out thinking he got the normal character name, all hell will break lose. However, as a rule of thumb, you will, at the very least, type in the name to see whats up on the other side, do an archive.org check, study the accumulated whois records at whois.sc, then decide.

I think the sellers are trying to create "grab it now" excitement and rush the process for a quick kill.

The problem is, you reach more "end users" at ebay who aren't domain saavy..these are the guys being targeted and taken advantage of.

Take a look at this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...739184558&rd=1

Just stupid people preying on *really* stupid people...This one's especially odd because at $1025.00 currently...the reserve isn't met!! Not sure who's stupider! They would be lucky to get thier $8 back for it.There are tons of IDN "sex" combinations still available..šềx.com, şệx.com,sęx.com to name a few..none of which actually mean "sex" in any language.Same for pokér.com.
They are completely missing the point of IDN's..

"This Name generates over 300.000.000 Pages on google.com

Type in sèx and sex and you will see the high quality of this gigant Domain name.

Google and all other search engines found nearly exactly the same for sex and sèx."

Gee, when I tried typing in sèx, I got 710 results.. a far cry from 300,000,000!

Lol I'd think the buyer was more ignorant but the seller, dumber. I wonder how much he wants for it. Yeah I agree that they're missing the point of IDNs, but I guess they're making money off of it.

Same as much of the hosting industry. These are just individuals and companies playing on the ignorance of others. Ethically, there is certainly a problem but legally there isn't much to work with.

Hm, and the starting bid was $129?! Where are they buying their domains? Fort Knox?

Should drop some emails to Sprint and Microsoft.

Odds are there you have some uninformed domainer IMHO. Probably a 15 year old kid using his dad's account that thinks he's found a virtual gold mine.

The Laci.org auction bothers me - I guess some people don't mind making money off of tragedy. I half-way expect to see a tsunami and indian ocean related domain at the rate we're going up for sale soon.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=61977

I also see it alot with religion - especially Christianity. People jack up the domains on ebay and in the forums. I asked for a domain recently and realized that was a mistake. I'd get a crappy domain asking for $xxxx to $xxxxx.

Ebay Auctions...
isold4u.com - $50k
gonetscape.com - $325k
web-chick.com and web-chicks.com - $700k ea.
Nasdaq.sc - $1 mil (bidding@ $10)

Your fears have been realized:

And tribute sites are one thing, but profiting off someone else's grief in that respect is not cool.

The domain name category at eBay is becoming a real thieves market.
I wouldn't doubt it if eBay modified or totally got out of domain names, but, alas, eBay may be the biggest thief of all.

True, but after a bit, you'd think someone with a conscience would realize there's money to be made ethically as well.

Unfortunantly, that's not the case. If those people saw how easy it was to scam, what would push them to sell ethically, if it would take longer, harder, and require more effort?
