more hyphens, it seems 3 hyphens are unregisterable

Just tried to register a com with 3 hyphens next to each other. Tried it at godaddy, enom and namecheap, the last 2 go fully through the register proces but are unable to register the domain in the end.

I see that there are names with 3 hypens registered like for example o---o.com. Has this something to do with setting of the registrar and has somebody a registrar where I can register words with 3 hypens or more next to each other.

With all due respect,
are you sure you want to do such a thing?

best regards,

Actually I was just interested in the possibilty, but now I came this far I just want to have such a domain for my private collection

But first is this possible, because so so far it looks not.

Anyone who can give info about this let me know.

There are a number of RFCs that outline the rules for domain names, although I couldn't say off hand if which was the most complete and definitive. 1035 describes the technical nitty gritty of the DNS protocol, and lists certain limitations. 3492 outlines the algorithms for IDNs, and also lists certain limitations.

My understanding is that a name can not start or end with a hyphen, but has no limitation on the number of hyphens in the middle, I've seen names with more than a dozen consecutive hyphens.

I always wanted to register ...---... .com

if you had a---a.com

You can have 3 hyphend but not all together.

You CAN'T have hyp---hen.com
You CAN have h-y-p-hen.com

But I wouldn't suggest doing that.

As for other people registering them, there may have been some law about registering them but they registered that domain before a law like that was passed. _\T/_ - new smilie

Thought something special about them.

Thanks for clearing this up Qwert

Somebody who has info on this restricting law? I'm curious.
