Cats.net - Just sold for $7,000 on Sedo

I've just seen that Cats.net just sold for $7,000 on Sedo.
In my opinion this is a superb name and the sale is a very bearish signal on domains.
what are your thoughts?

Great name, but I am not a fan of the .net extension. I am surprised it went this cheap though and I do think it reflects on the current state of the economy.

Good site for selling cat nets, I've always found the cat nets I've bought to be poor quality, hopefully this site will raise the bar and provide higher quality cat nets!

I think the buyer overpaid.

Congrats to the seller, though!

That would be nice, it is crazy tough trying to herd cats.

.net
Cats (the animal) are mainly free
1 advertiser for the 135 Million returns on Google
Economy
Wasn't promoted all that much

Those are a couple reasons I see why it may have ended for $7K, but considering Bikes.net sold for $7K this year at DomainFest, I would rather be the owner of Bikes.net for $7K instead of Cats.net for $7K.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=567578

Side Note: considering the auction just ended today... I wouldn't consider this domain as "sold". The auction did end with the high bid @ $7K.

Payment and domain transferred to a new owner would be considered sold.

Other single word .net sales this year under $7K according to DnJournal.com

Wrecker.net $6.3K
Diploma.net $6K
Animation.net $5.5K

Was sold at a big loss, I bought cats.net and dogs.net for $75k in late 2005 (LLLL.com and .tv cheerleaders there is some good ammunition for you ). It isn't the type of name I want to hold in the current climate though.

It was a big overpayment at the time though I also think also the .net market has had a far more serious fall than .com generally, as have all the other "alt" type extensions in my view.

Why you paid end-users high price for both? Did you have development plan back then or you thought that you can flip it for more later?

I thought they were reseller prices at the time.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=567578

No I had no development plan, I don't have such plans on any domains I buy and never have. Interested in PPC revenue and speculation (to a lesser degree), those these days I have put a line through the speculation category entirely.

I might be in the minority, but I think Cats.net was a bargain for $7K. I think I could have emailed end users and got higher offers than that easily.

Sure most cats are free, but some cost thousands, and I am sure there are plenty of potential end users.

I have sold several much worse Word.net for low - mid $X,XXX

Brad

Have you contacted any potential end users before selling cats.net on sedo?

Like cat food companies and such.

Snoop is not a big fan of "contacting end users" so I doubt he did because as Brad stated he could get a better price by contacting them.

Sorry to hear of the loss Snoop, but maybe the Dogs.net purchase will pay off for you yet. I wouldn't be selling Dogs.net unless it was to Petco, PetSmart, or any large dog company period!

I think the possible enduser interest would be in pet supplies rather than actually selling "cats".

There are literally thousands of .NET alone that start with "Cats", many of them are related to things other than the animal.

I just consider it a pretty bad decision to send this to auction without actually contacting end users.

People who only deal with domainers have no idea how much money is being made flipping their domains to interested end users.

What would you say is the probability of that happening though? Honestly I own/have owned lots of very good quality .net's and have never had any real enduser interest. It isn't like .com where there is some (moderate) degree of enduser enquiry in my experience.

For the people so say they could easily sell this name for much more to an enduser, what would you pay for the name and what are you offering for dogs.net? How come you didn't win the auction? After all there is an easy profit to be made buying it and quickly selling it to an enduser?

With the right connections and selling skills, I think it'd be easy to make quite a bit off cats and dogs.net, they are brilliant names, they may not be a .com but they're still excellent for marketing. Have you considered contacting a broker for dogs.net?
