benefits of an ALMOST matching keyword domain?

i've seen plenty of domains that almost match searched keyword being used by big companies.

eg. if the keyword was NewKitchens and NewKitchens.com was taken, the domains used might be NewKitchensTips.com or NewKitchensHelp.com.

I've even seen domains of the type zNewKitchens.com and NewKitchens1.com

What are people's opinion on these types of domains? Is there a significant SEO advantage of having a close match to a searched keyword (over, say, a brandable like "GreatKitchens.com")?

What do you like using - plurals, "and"s, "tips"? And what's the limit of this type of strategy for SEO -- is smaller extra words better..?

Having the keywords in the domain name is just one factor of other hundreds that affect rankings. Just because your domain has the keywords in it does not mean it has much of an edge over competitor, brand name domains in terms of SEO.
